Graduate Highlight 🎓 Through the Duke Center for Computational and Digital Health Innovation, we are excited to highlight Sarah Eom, a new Ph.D. graduate in Electrical and Computer Engineering at Duke University and a member of our Associate Director of Extended Reality, Maria Gorlatova’s Intelligent Interactive Internet of Things (I³T) Lab. Sarah’s work bridges augmented reality, IoT, and healthcare innovation, with applications spanning neurosurgery, ophthalmology, and mental health. Her research focuses on developing technologies that guide clinicians, trainees, and patients in real-world medical environments. During her time at Duke, Sarah also served as an FDA ORISE Fellow and is now continuing her impact as a Biomedical Engineering Consultant at Exponent. We are proud to celebrate the interdisciplinary innovation and translational impact represented by Sarah’s work and excited to see what comes next in her journey. 💙 #DigitalHealth #DukeEngineering #AugmentedReality #IoT #HealthcareInnovation #ComputationalHealth

You thought digital twins were only for rockets and turbines… but here’s one for single cells! 🚀🔬 In our new paper, Microfluidic Digital Twin for Enhanced Single-cell Analysis, we created a virtual replica of a mechano-node-pore sensing (mechano-NPS) device to predict & optimize how individual cells flow and deform under different pressures. By combining fluid-dynamics simulations with cellular behavior models—and validating against real cell-velocity/deformation data—we’ve built a tool that speeds up device design and lets you test biological hypotheses in silico. The result? Strong agreement on cell-deformation indices and clear insights into velocity biases—proving these tiny virtual twins can transform single-cell experiments. Ready to see how? 👇 🔗 Read the full paper: duke.is/iccs25twin Led by Samreen Mahmud with Wentao Ma, Taylor Thomsen, Chang Chen, Rachel Rex, Andre Lai & Lydia Sohn Presented at ICCS 2025 in Singapore Supported by an @NIH funded collaboration between @DukeEngineering and @UCBerkeley #DigitalTwin #Microfluidics #SingleCell #Bioengineering #ICCS2025 #DukeEngineering
