There’s a thing that happens when sports biographies try to get inside the mind of the champion. A sort of literary osmosis. You expect fire, obsession, darkness, insight. What you often get is a hollow echo of a press conference, lacquered with pop psychology and third-hand anecdotes from someone’s uncle who once stringed rackets at a Futures tournament. 🧠🎾 So when a book like Novak – Nella mente di Djokovic (yes, inside the mind, no less) is called “the best sports book of the year” — by The Times, no less, a publication that knows the value of a good headline and the irrelevance of its accuracy — you prepare yourself for at least a few pearls. Something. Anything. And then. Then, you read: “It didn’t help that in 2024 he had a bit of bad luck. At the Italian Open, a fan accidentally dropped a water bottle on his head, causing dizziness and nausea and some loss of balance and composure in the next match.” Which is, genuinely, one of the most unintentionally hilarious pieces of sportswriting you’ll ever encounter in a supposedly serious analysis of an athlete whose mental fortress is legendary, if not downright mythologised. A bottle. A literal bottle. On the head. Caused Djokovic to lose balance and composure. In Rome, no less. The Eternal City, now patron saint of pratfalls. Not to discount the dangers of falling objects (health & safety etc.) — but this is not so much insight into Novak’s psyche as it is a Monty Python sketch smuggled into non-fiction. Somewhere, between the stoicism of Marcus Aurelius and the resilience of Rocky Balboa, lies this tragicomic vignette: the GOAT, undone by Evian. 🥴💧 If this is “the best sports book of the year”, we might genuinely be in a post-literary era — not in the cool, Derrida way, but in the “AI summarised it on Goodreads and still made more sense” kind of way. #Djokovic #BookReview #TennisLit #Roma2024 #DFWStyle #Novak #SportWriting #FallingObjects #GOATLogic

Something major just lit up the night skies over Kyiv. Waiting to hear what it was. So far people are guessing that it's either a meteorite, a NASA satellite, or just an old boring Russian missile shot down by the Ukrainian air defense. #Kyiv #Ukraine
