GKE provides better default logging than EKS with three log sources enabled out-of-the-box, but critical Data Access audit logs remain disabled by default and cannot be reconstructed post-incident. Key IR considerations for GKE: • Standard vs Autopilot mode determines forensic capabilities - Autopilot blocks node-level access entirely • Data Access audit logs capture secret enumeration and kubectl exec activity but require pre-enabling • Default logs: Admin Activity (resource modifications), System Logs (container runtime), Application Logs (workload output) • Missing by default: API server logs, scheduler logs, controller manager logs, control plane network/SSH events • FluentBit vulnerability (GCP-2023-047) chained with Anthos Service Mesh permissions for cluster-admin escalation Investigation approach: • Start with Cloud Logging filtered by affected node and timeframe • Query for unusual kubectl exec: `protoPayload.methodName="io.k8s.core.v1.Pod.exec"` • Quarantine compromised pods with deny-all NetworkPolicy while preserving for analysis • Remove pod labels to stop production traffic routing Enable Data Access audit logs before incidents occur - they're the most valuable for investigations but cannot be retroactively enabled. #DFIR_Radar

There are a number of key domains in the cloud space to understand and Linux is one of them. #Linux #logging is key to debugging issues and in many cases you will have to do this when something important breaks. Seeing examples of the full stack, from journald and rsyslog internals to centralized architectures with #FluentBit, #Loki, and #Grafana is a good starting point. The examples here cover the tools and the reasoning behind design choices, like why Kafka matters as a buffer in regulated environments and how Loki label cardinality can quietly wreck your logging pipeline if you're not careful.
