Leaders—Are You Living the 5/15/80 Rule? Kim Marshall’s 5/15/80 Rule is a game-changer for instructional leadership—and a reality check for how we spend our time. Here’s the breakdown: •80% of your leadership time in classrooms •15% providing feedback and coaching •5% on logistics, management, and “other stuff” Here’s how real principals make it work: 1.Schedule Classroom Blocks First: At the start of every week, block out 90–120 minutes per day for walkthroughs or observations. Treat it like a meeting. No one cancels on it—especially not you. 2.Use a Simple Feedback Tool: Limit your feedback to one or two high-leverage areas aligned to your school goals. Use a quick form or even a shared Google Doc to log brief notes for teachers—this keeps things focused and efficient. 3.Batch Operational Tasks: Instead of responding to every email or request as it comes in, schedule one or two short blocks each day to handle paperwork, calls, and approvals. Don’t let the urgent push out the important. 4.Empower Your Team: Train your front office and APs to triage non-instructional issues. If the copy machine’s broken, you shouldn’t be the first to know. 5.Track Your Time Honestly: At the end of the week, reflect: Where did your time actually go? Use it as data—not guilt. Adjust and aim closer to that 80. Why it matters: When leaders are consistently in classrooms, giving timely feedback, and keeping the main thing the main thing—teaching and learning improve. Teachers feel supported. Students feel seen. Culture shifts. It’s not about doing more—it’s about doing the right things with intention. #5_15_80Rule #InstructionalLeadership #WalkthroughCulture #FocusOnLearning #SchoolLeadership #PrincipalPriorities #LeadershipSystems #KeepTheMainThingTheMainThing
The Game Is in the Classroom — No More Excuses One of the most common phrases we hear from school leaders is, “I want to be in classrooms more, but I’m just too busy.” The truth is, effective principals don’t wait for time—they build systems that protect it. The most impactful instructional leaders make it a priority to be consistently present where learning happens: in the classroom. According to Leithwood and Louis (2012), school leadership is the second most influential school-based factor in student achievement—right behind quality instruction. And as Michael Fullan has stated, “The principal’s presence in classrooms is not optional—it’s essential for deep, lasting change.” @MichaelFullan1 So how are successful leaders making it happen? 1. Block It Like a Meeting: Principals like Dr. Joe Sanfelippo schedule daily walkthrough time just like a meeting. It’s on the calendar, non-negotiable, and protected. Once it’s part of your routine, your staff sees that you are committed to their work and student learning. @Joe_Sanfelippo 2. Train Your Office to Protect Instructional Time: Strong leaders empower their secretaries or front office teams to manage what needs immediate attention versus what can wait. This clears the way for uninterrupted classroom time. 3. Align Walkthroughs to Your Goals: Using models like Elena Aguilar’s Transformational Coaching framework, effective leaders conduct targeted walkthroughs based on specific schoolwide goals—like student engagement, academic discourse, or use of formative assessment. @brightmorningtm 4. Use Accountability Partners: As Principal Baruti Kafele often reminds us, leadership is a choice. Ask your AP, coach, or even another principal to check in: “Did you get into classrooms today?” If not—what got in the way, and how can you adjust? @PrincipalKafele 5. Adopt the 5/15/80 Rule (from Kim Marshall): Spend 80 percent of your instructional leadership time in classrooms, 15 percent giving feedback, and just 5 percent on operations and logistics. It requires discipline and systems—but it’s possible, and it transforms schools. At the end of the day, the most important work we do happens in partnership with teachers and students. If the game is in the classroom, that’s where we need to be. Every day. With purpose. No excuses. #InstructionalLeadership #SchoolImprovement #LeadWhereItMatters #ClassroomFocusedLeadership #EdLeadership #NoExcuses #PrincipalPriorities #SystemNotHope

It’s heartbreaking to see schools, meant to be safe havens for children, become platforms for ideological agendas instead of places of true education and wisdom. As parents, uncles, aunts, grandparents, and communities, we have a sacred duty to protect children from harm and guide them with truth! Not expose them to divisive activism that distracts from learning. According to the CDC, children thrive in environments where they feel safe, supported, and focused on core educational values, not political or social indoctrination. Studies also show that excessive exposure to ideological content can increase anxiety and confusion in students, undermining their mental health and academic growth. (American Psychological Association – Impact of Political Polarization on Youth: apa.org/monitor/2023/01/tren…) Schools should prioritize protecting children, fostering critical thinking, and imparting wisdom, not pushing agendas that divide or confuse. The Bible reminds us in Proverbs 22:6, “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.” This calls us to guide our children with godly wisdom and protect them from anything that could lead them astray… Whether in homes, churches, or schools. Let’s advocate for education that uplifts and protects, not harms, kids. #ProtectOurChildren #EducationNotIndoctrination #SchoolSafety #ParentalRights #BiblicalWisdom #FocusOnLearning

By keeping cellphones out of the classroom, they’ve reduced distractions and improved learning outcomes. Proud to support our legislation directing the DOE to develop a statewide policy ensuring NJ schools keep the focus on learning! #EducationFirst #FocusOnLearning @GovMurphy @ASWRosyBagolie

Before jumping to conclusions, let’s set the record straight—there’s no evidence that Elon Musk ever said this. This claim originates from satire and has no factual basis. That said, the real discussion should be about ensuring that classrooms focus on education, not activism. Schools should be places of learning, where every student is treated fairly and without ideological influence. Let’s focus on math, science, and preparing kids for the future, rather than turning classrooms into political battlegrounds. 🇺🇸 #EducationFirst #FocusOnLearning
