RISC OS FontManager bug. This is what I mean about “rub-out” – it behaves differently if there’s a colour change in the string. This is wrong, but it’s always done it, so one couldn’t unilaterally fix it now. Hence I’m “fixing it with a new one” in FM4.

Whilst surprising myself about the nature of the “4 greys” desktop mode, I accidentally demonstrated the difference between antialiased and aliased hinting in RISC OS FontManager:

RISC OS background: I’ve been fighting with the FontManager API trying to work out how to smoothly integrate the requirements of Text Shaping into the existing FM API, and the big problem (one of them) is string representation (due to FM’s uniquely-high-level API).

If you’re familiar with iconflags, you’ll know that icons can specify their own font by setting b6, at which point b24-31 become a font handle (one of the API requirements for byte-sized handles there BTW). But FontManager has never allowed a font handle of zero.

FontManager doesn’t use pixel sizes when opening a font – it uses point sizes which scale the “em square” and have no direct correlation to the physical size of the glyphs that are produced. I thought it would be nice to be able to specify cap-height in pixels (well, OS units):

I'll see what I can do, do you know if the font was properly ported to iOS? Also have you tried SFArabic instead of SFArabicRounded? If that doesn't work I will try to find another fix and update FontManager to fix it✌️
