But this neglects the obvious fact that the Republican Party is now a shattered hulk, and that many of these petty struggles amount to a quarrel over deck chairs on the Titanic. The same goes for the recent MAGA orgy of ultra-gerrymandering, in which concocting MAGA-majority congressional districts inevitably dilutes the shrinking pro-Trump electorate, leading to nasty surprises, which the loyal machine hacks cannot anticipate. Democrats simply need to redouble their organizing efforts. In Britain, Labour Party opponents of Starmer like Burnham and Streeting are calling for a reversal of the catastrophic Brexit referendum of 2016, allowing the hard-pressed UK to regain the benefits of membership in the world’s largest economy. They need to explain in detail the damage Britain has suffered from this lunatic interlude, and also point out the overwhelming responsibility for this disaster, which must be assigned to the cynical demagogue Nigel Farage, the Trump clone and crony who thinks he is on his way to Number 10 Downing Street with the help of his so-called Reform Party, largely a collection of Tory retreads. Farage must be shown as largely responsible for the decade of economic decline in despair, which has afflicted the UK. Reform is no future for Britain. THE CIVILIZATIONAL MASOCHISM, SELF-CONTEMPT, AND SELF-LOATHING OF CERTAIN WESTERN POPULATIONS AS FACTORS IN WORLD HISTORY TODAY: IN DEFENSE OF WESTERN CIVILIZATION Over the past decade, it has become clear that the MAGA phenomenon and related populist-reactionary mass movements in the Western world must be regarded more as psychopathology than as political parties. This involves the presence of broken souls or wounded souls who are the human casualties generated by financial globalization in the form of factory closures, impoverished communities, collapsing standards of living, foreclosures, and other damage inflicted by neoliberal Wall Street. The broken souls are attracted to the troubled psyche of a prominent antinomian-lawless leader who promises to be their champion, but who regards them with disdain is useful idiots. In the resulting narcissistic symbiosis, the brutalized masses in effect give up on their own lives and cultivate a vicarious existence through the successes of their demagogic leader. But this is not the only form of psychopathology which is presently influencing the politics of the Western world. The inability of large parts of public opinion to understand and act against the deadly threat posed by the Russia-China-Iran-North Korea totalitarian aggressor bloc points to another species of mental disturbance. The problem involves forms of self-hatred, self-contempt, and self-loathing on the part of certain Western populations. The phenomenon has been narrowly called oikonophobiaor intense dislike of one’s own home (country) by the reactionary British philosopher Roger Scruton, but what we currently see is a much broader rejection of Western civilization as a whole, with a special animus against the United States. These attitudes have become pronounced, especially in the aftermath of the Hamas sneak attack aggression against Israel on October 7, 2023. Many have responded to the ongoing world crisis by becoming convinced that Western civilization itself, and especially the United States, represents an abomination of imperialism, racism, arrogance, and exploitation so extreme that the entire West must be regarded as the bane of the planet. Not just impressionable students, but colleges and universities, the mass media, celebrities, and liberal to progressive politicians have often exhibited this view. Since Trump’s attack on Iran on February 28 of this year, normally reasonable Democratic Party politicians, apparently guided by their own private polling, have begun to present the murderous Iranian regime as a relatively harmless and benign social form, which must be believed when it claims to have renounced any ambition to acquire nuclear weapons. It is worth pointing out what is currently happening, because it can easily pose a threat to the current anti-MAGA mobilization as we move towards the vital November midterm elections. When they hear a politician claiming that the “Death to America” regime in Tehran is not an imminent threat and therefore almost benign, large parts of the US population are liable to conclude that such a politician is in effect anti-American and pro-Iranian, which could spell disaster at the polls. (A separate danger is that an ignominious US retreat from the Gulf of the type Trump might well choose could easily encourage aggressors like Putin, Xi, and Kim to take advantage of the current weak and erratic administration to launch attacks on the Baltic states, Taiwan, or South Korea.) Civilizational masochism has of course been widespread here in the United States since the time of the Vietnam War. It should also be noted that anti-Western attitudes have historically been fostered and spread by the Byzantine Empire and its western exclave, the highly influential Venetian Republic. Byzantium cultivated an anti-Western stance, especially starting in the ninth century AD in response to the revival of the West under Charlemagne, thanks in particular to the Byzantine Patriarch Photius, who provoked an early east-west schism even before the Great Schism of 1054. Both Russia and the Islamicist movements can be regarded as descendants of the Byzantine Empire. These forces share the Byzantine collectivist tradition and exhibit profound dedication to opposition, chastisement, and possible destruction of the Western world. Russia of course, converted to Orthodox Christianity under Byzantine auspices, and this anti-westernism was the classic outlook of the 19th-century Slavophiles. The Koran contains a sura entitled al-Rum (Rome, which is what the Byzantines called themselves), a kind of endorsement of Byzantium in the form of a forecast that the eastern Romans would prevail in their seventh century war under the emperor Heraclius against the Achmaenid Persian Empire. Three important moments in the history of Byzantine-Venetian inspired Western anti-Westernism stand out. First is the French essayist Michelle de Montaigne’s 1580s thesis that while his countrymen regarded some tribesmen from South America as cannibals, it was the French of the wars of religion who were the actual cannibals. The Bordelais Montaigne was a great admirer of Venice who wanted to live there in retirement, possibly in the company of his friend Etienne de la Boetie, the author of a “Discourse on Voluntary Servitude” which helped destabilize France in a critical moment. Montaigne, like the postmodernists of our time, was a skeptic who felt he basically could not know. Voltaire, the great adversary of Leibniz and of the scientific optimism of the Enlightenment, may well have started his career as a protégé of the Venetian patrician Antonio Conti. The figure of the blasé Venetian Senator Pococurante in Candideis based on Conti. Jean-Jacques Rousseau has the important pedigree of having briefly lived in Venice as the secretary to the French ambassador. Rousseau’s notion of the noble savage asserts that civilization means corruption, while the less-developed societies are in effect morally superior. We can also add that Karl Marx, the originator of the classic anti-western heresy of the nineteenth century, was a descendant of Meir Ben Isaac Katzenellenbogen (1482-1565), the Chief Rabbi of Padua (Venice). Like the Del Banco-Warburgs, this appears to be an example of a Venetian Jewish family that migrated into Germany under a different name. Marx’s paternal grandmother, herself a Katzenellenbogen, was the daughter of the Chief Rabbi of England. How much Venetian influence was passed down to Marx? As the figure of the rake Casanova (officially a Venetian agent) reminds us, Venice had a long-standing commitment to weakening the power of France, often working through the so-called cabal of the libertines. This remarkable effort reflects the accurate judgment by the Venetians that France was the greatest military threat to the existence of Venice, as seen in the crushing Venetian defeat at the battle of Agnadello in 1509, when the Venetians lost their entire land Empire in a single day, and then in 1799, when it was Napoleon Bonaparte who ended the existence of the Venetian Republic in the Treaty of Campo Formio. Anti-Western methodology is expressed in our time especially in the form of postmodernism, the school of thought that explicitly regards the Western world as imperialist, racist, oppressive, and so forth, with a special support for identity politics and a resentment for settler colonialism, as seen in Mamdani senior, a Columbia professor of post-colonialism. Postmodernism tends to conclude that reason, reality and truth are unobtainable or at best represent acts of domination by the more powerful over their weaker victims. Relevant names would include Foucault, Derrida, Lyotard, Baudrillard, and assorted post-structuralists. The central role of the postmodernists in the current outbreak of self-loathing in the West has been made possible by the hegemonic influence of the postmodernist school in the humanities at American colleges and universities and among intellectuals generally, where postmodernism has furnished many of the key features of political correctness. In the United States today, many liberals and ultra-lefts have embraced the tenets of postmodernism, and have abandoned the heritage of Franklin D. Roosevelt, leaving a vacuum which has been partially occupied by reactionary demagogues. To fix this problem, intellectuals must drop their common pose of being too decadent to be patriotic. Background Information for Putin’s May 9 Victory Day Celebration: How Stalin Deliberately Chose War in Europe in August 1939 and Approved the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact for This Express Purpose In the context of Russian dictator Putin’s repeated demand for special recognition for the USSR and Russia in the defeat of Nazism and fascism in Europe, it is important to provide context. Putin is of course not interested in a discussion of the Molotov-Ribbentrop or Hitler-Stalin pact of August 23, 1939, which immediately preceded the outbreak of general war in Europe on September 1, 1939. A long-neglected piece of evidence that is relevant here is the text of a secret speech given by Soviet dictator Stalin to the members (including Molotov) of the Soviet Communist Party Politburo on August 19, 1939, in which Stalin announced and motivated his decision to reject the overtures of the Anglo-French Drax-Doumenc mission then in Moscow and to accept the offer of a nonaggression pact with Nazi Germany being made by German Foreign Minister von Ribbentrop, who was about to arrive in Moscow. Soviet and Russian historiography has long denied that any Politburo meeting occurred on August 19, 1939. But an account of this secret meeting was published by the French Havas news agency shortly after World War II had started, and over the years texts of Stalin’s secret address have been published in the Revue de Droit International of Geneva and in the Soviet literary magazine Novy Mir of Moscow. This extremely important but generally neglected document of Stalin’s cynical nihilism and deliberate, conscious determination to unleash a world war speaks for itself. Stalin’s Speech to the Politburo, August 19, 1939 The question of war and peace has entered a critical phase for us. Its solution depends entirely on the position which will be taken by the Soviet Union. We are absolutely convinced that if we conclude a mutual assistance pact with France and Great Britain, Germany will back off from Poland and seek a modus vivendi with the Western Powers. War would be avoided, but further events could prove dangerous for the USSR. On the other hand, if we accept Germany’s proposal, that you know, and conclude a non-aggression pact with her, she will certainly invade Poland, and the intervention of France and England is then unavoidable. Western Europe would be subjected to serious upheavals and disorder. In this case, we will have a great opportunity to stay out of the conflict, and we could plan the opportune time for us to enter the war. The experience of the last 20 years has shown that in peacetime the Communist movement is never strong enough for the Bolshevik Party to seize power. The dictatorship of such a Party will only become possible as the result of a major war. Our choice is clear. We must accept the German proposal and, with a refusal, politely send the Anglo-French mission home. It is not difficult to envisage the importance which we would obtain in this way of proceeding. It is obvious for us that Poland will be destroyed even before England and France are able to come to her assistance. In this case, Germany will cede to us a part of Poland … Our immediate advantage will be to take Poland all the way to the gates of Warsaw, as well as Ukrainian Galicia. Germany grants us full freedom of action in the Pre-Baltic (the three Baltic States) and recognizes our claims on Bessarabia. She is prepared to acknowledge our interests in Romania, Bulgaria and Hungary. Yugoslavia remains an open question, the solution of which depends on the position taken by Italy. If Italy remains at the sides of Germany, then the latter will require that Yugoslavia be understood as her zone of influence, and it is also by Yugoslavia that she will obtain access to the Adriatic Sea. But if Italy does not go with Germany, then the latter will depend on Italy for her access to the Adriatic Sea, and in this case Yugoslavia will pass into our sphere of influence. This in case Germany would emerge victorious from the war. We must, however, envisage the possibilities that will result from the defeat as well as from the victory of Germany. In the case of her defeat, a Sovietization of Germany will unavoidably occur, and a Communist government will be created. We should not forget that a Sovietized Germany would bring about great danger, if this Sovietization is the result of German defeat in a transient war. England and France will still be strong enough to seize Berlin and to destroy a Soviet Germany. We would be unable to come eventually to the aid of our Bolshevik comrades in Germany. Therefore, our goal is that Germany should carry out the war as long as possible so that England and France grow weary and become exhausted to such a degree that they are no longer in a position to put down a Sovietized Germany. Our position in this: Maintaining neutrality and waiting for the right time, the USSR will presently assist Germany economically and supply her with raw materials and provisions. It goes without saying that our assistance should not exceed a certain limit; we must not send so much as to weaken our economy or the power of our army. At the same time, we must carry on active Communist propaganda in the Anglo-French bloc, and predominantly in France. We must expect that in that country in times of war, the Party should abandon the legal means of political warfare and go underground. We know that their work will demand great sacrifices, but our French comrades will not hesitate. Their first task will be to decompose and demoralize the army and the police. If this preparatory work is fulfilled properly, the safety of the Soviet Germany will be assured, and this will contribute to the Sovietization of France. For the realization of these plans, it is essential that the war continue for as long as possible, and all forces which we have available in Western Europe and the Balkans should be directed toward this goal. Now let us consider the second possibility, a German victory. Some think that this would confront us with a great danger. There is some truth in this, but it would be a mistake to regard the danger as so close at hand or as great as has been proposed. If Germany should prove to be victorious, she will leave the war too weakened to start a war with the USSR for a decade at least. She will have to supervise the occupation of France and England and restore herself. In addition, a victorious Germany will have vast colonies/territories; the exploitation of those and their adaptation to German methods will also absorb Germany during several decades. Obviously, this Germany will be too busy elsewhere to turn against us. There is one additional thing that will strengthen our safety. In a conquered France, the French Communist Party will always be very strong. A communist revolution will unavoidably break out, and we will be able to exploit the situation and to come to the aid of France and make her out ally. In addition, all the nations that fall under the “protection” of a victorious Germany will become our allies. This presents for us a broad field of action for the initiation of world revolution. Comrades, I have presented my consideration to you. I repeat that it is in the interest of the USSR, the workers’ homeland, that a war break out between the Reich and the capitalist Anglo-French bloc. Everything should be done so that it drags out as long as possible with the goal of weakening both sides. For this reason, it is imperative that we agree to conclude the pact proposed by Germany, and then work in such a way that this war, once it is declared, will be prolonged to the maximum. We must strengthen our propaganda work in the belligerent countries, in order to be prepared when the war ends.
