Next week, we're beginning two new fuels reduction projects near rural communities in Yavapai and Cochise Counties. The Cherry Horse Project will reduce hazardous fuels around Dewey-Humbolt, while also increasing the diversity of vegetation and improving wildlife habitat. The Dragoon Project will create a shaded fuel break to the southeast of town and remove vegetation near Interstate 10 in case of a wildfire start along the interstate. This is #GoodFire at work in Inyo County. Through CAL FIRE’s Vegetation Management Program, firefighters with the CAL FIRE San Bernardino/Inyo/Mono Unit recently worked on a 1,400-acre fuel-reduction project near Independence. The reduced vegetation that could fuel wildfire, removed invasive plants, and restored wildlife habitat to help lower wildfire risk and protect nearby communities. CAL FIRE engages in fuels reduction work and fire prevention activities year-round. Track the progress of projects at: bit.ly/CFFuelTracker #CALFIRE #FuelsReduction #InyoCounty #RxFire

Fuels Reduction Project Completed at Spring Valley Lake CAL FIRE’s Pilot Rock Fire Center, in coordination with San Bernardino County Flood Control, completed a critical fuels reduction project in the Mojave River corridor near Spring Valley Lake. Crews treated ~26 acres by removing dead trees, thinning brush and grasses, and reducing hazardous fuel buildup to lower wildfire risk for nearby communities. Work included hand crews, chainsaws, chippers, heavy equipment, and controlled pile burning. These efforts improve defensible space, protect life and property, and strengthen wildfire resilience. Thank you to our partners and CAL FIRE crews for making this important safety project possible. #CALFIRE #FuelsReduction #WildfirePrevention #DefensibleSpace #ReadySetGo #CommunitySafety

As part of ongoing vegetation management efforts in Inyo County, CAL FIRE engine crews recently conducted burn pile operations targeting salt cedar (tamarisk)—a highly invasive plant species that threatens local ecosystems. Salt cedar aggressively displaces native vegetation, alters soil conditions, increases wildfire risk, and consumes significant amounts of water in already arid environments. Left unmanaged, it can quickly dominate riparian corridors and open landscapes. Removing invasive species like salt cedar is an important step in restoring native habitats, improving fire resilience, and protecting natural resources. This work reflects CAL FIRE’s broader commitment to proactive land stewardship and wildfire risk reduction—beyond a single project or burn operation. #CALFIRE #VegetationManagement #InvasiveSpecies #fuelsreduction #InyoCounty #WildfirePrevention

Fuels reduction projects aren't a one-time thing—they are important, ongoing processes that create wildfire-prepared communities; aiding firefighters in protecting those communities. Fuels reduction projects help reduce wildfire risks by removing overgrown vegetation through methods such as prescribed fire, tree thinning, pruning, chipping, and roadway clearance, creating breaks that change fire behavior and reducing negative impacts to our ecosystems. CAL FIRE engages in fuels reduction work and fire prevention activities throughout the year.
