I do like Swedish Birch as a #StreetTree. All but native, elegantly compact, architectural pendulus form, gorgeous bark and I haven’t even mentioned the leaves yet.

The 44 Japanese flowering cherries (#sakura) planted in #SpringfieldPark Hackney are in full blossom 2 years after they were planted at the height of lockdown.

Prunus Accolade showing how to get pollinated before offering pollen for onward transmissions to others. Stigma pops out between petals before they open.
Rather untidy clone but pretty in flower. Semi-double, pale pink. Early, just after Prunus Pandora.

English Elm hiding from Elm Bark beetles in #AbneyPark.
Eventually the beetles will find it and Dutch Elm Disease will cut this tree’s life short but the roots will survive, continuously pushing up suckers like this one.

Amazing colour. The not so well named Chinese Cedar (Toona sinensis) coming into leaf. It’s not a cedar, or even a conifer. Also known as Chinese Mahogany.

I’m pretty sure this is Prunus 'Collingwood Ingram’, although it could be the parent Prunus Kursar. This tree flowers just after Prunus Okame which is very similar and an increasingly frequent #StreetTree. All are excellent for early #pollinators.

Okame cherry is in flower 🌸 in London now. A wonderful early flowering cherry that brightens late winter and heralds the start of spring. Found on many streets in Hackney. Bees love if planted in direct sun.

Alongside hearingboth Mum & Dad got their first vaccine doses, this might be the highlight (& we need them) of the year so far. @TM_Hackney are amazing, being taught step by step how to plant a tree even in the pouring rain was joyous, plus these blossom trees will be beautiful.
