Cedar of Lebanon #CliisoldPark looking good in the sun yesterday. Planted this tree with Hackney Tree Wardens in 1999, four years before I set up #TreeMusketeers. “The best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago.” #HackneyTrees @Clissoldpeople #TreeWardens #Cedrus #Cedruslibani

I do like Swedish Birch as a #StreetTree. All but native, elegantly compact, architectural pendulus form, gorgeous bark and I haven’t even mentioned the leaves yet. #TreeSelection #GoodStreetTreeS #HackneyTrees #DalstonTrees #Treeruss

#Sakura #hanami It’s great when a planting scheme works out. The 44 Japanese flowering cherries (#sakura) planted in #SpringfieldPark Hackney are in full blossom 2 years after they were planted at the height of lockdown. Fabulous Great White, Beni Yutaka & Yoshino. #HackneyTrees

Due to a bout of Covid I had to postpone this talk to Sat 4th June 2pm. I will be teaching unusual tree ID and discussing the role non-native trees play in the urban ecology of London. You might want to bring a notebook. #StreetTree #TreeID #TreeWalk #HackneyTrees #LondonTrees
#UrbanTreeFestival #TreeWalk SAT 21 May 2pm Which Trees are Good for Bees? bit.ly/3v3MRM2 What do unusual #StreetTrees offer biodiversity? Learn how to identify rare trees and their role in #UrbanEcology. I'll be discussing 4 aspects of #StreetTrees as #UrbanHabitat.

Prunus Accolade showing how to get pollinated before offering pollen for onward transmissions to others. Stigma pops out between petals before they open. Rather untidy clone but pretty in flower. Semi-double, pale pink. Early, just after Prunus Pandora. #HackneyTrees #Accolade

Rare Chinese Pearlbloom tree I've been struggling to ID this for years, having only ever seen this one in a front garden in #Dalston & another (not labelled!) in Bath Botanic Gardens. #ChinesePearlbloom #Poliothyrsis sinensis #Salicaceae #LondonTrees #HackneyTrees #RareTrees

English Elm hiding from Elm Bark beetles in #AbneyPark. Eventually the beetles will find it and Dutch Elm Disease will cut this tree’s life short but the roots will survive, continuously pushing up suckers like this one. #Ulmusprocera #EnglishElm #HackneyTrees #AbneyTrees #Ulmus

Had a good tree day - checking in with these two Birch that were vandalised and snapped at the base over ten years ago, but now strong multistem-trees looking 👌#ThePoliticsofStreetTrees #HackneyTrees

Amazing colour. The not so well named Chinese Cedar (Toona sinensis) coming into leaf. It’s not a cedar, or even a conifer. Also known as Chinese Mahogany. #HackneyArboretum #HackneyStreetTrees #HackneyTrees #Toona

I’m pretty sure this is Prunus 'Collingwood Ingram’, although it could be the parent Prunus Kursar. This tree flowers just after Prunus Okame which is very similar and an increasingly frequent #StreetTree. All are excellent for early #pollinators. #CollingwoodIngram #HackneyTrees

Okame cherry is in flower 🌸 in London now. A wonderful early flowering cherry that brightens late winter and heralds the start of spring. Found on many streets in Hackney. Bees love if planted in direct sun. #HackneyTrees #springblossom #HackneyStreetTrees #PrunusOkame

Finishing off @TM_Hackney #treeplanting @HackneyLFUG today. 5 wild cherry & 2 oaks. 3 barrows of mulch per tree. Keeps the soil moist, grass down, saves water & promotes lateral root growth. #SustainableTreePlanting #HackneyTrees #TreeMusketeers

It was a privilege. Great project, great partnership working. #hope #sakuraproject #SustainableTreePlanting #HackneyTrees
Alongside hearingboth Mum & Dad got their first vaccine doses, this might be the highlight (& we need them) of the year so far. @TM_Hackney are amazing, being taught step by step how to plant a tree even in the pouring rain was joyous, plus these blossom trees will be beautiful.
