A hungry #hicatee having a little snack.
Hicatee are herbivorous and feed on leaves and fruits that hang into or fall into the rivers from overhanging plants. They use their serrated beaks to help tear and chew the plant material.

Fun fact:
As #hicatee age, their scutes tend to fuse so individual scutes are no longer distinguishable. Then, when they shed, the molt comes off in large pieces, sometimes the entire carapace at once, instead of one scute at a time. Check out these cool hicatee molts!

Finally caught a beautiful male in this system (the turtle, not the gross human holding it). Unlike most #turtles, male #hicatee develop bright yellow, orange, or even green heads! It's one of the many things that makes this species so unique and interesting. #SaveTheHicatee

We're back from our adventure to a remote lagoon (6 hours by boat to get there!) Sadly, while we did catch some #hicatee, the population appears to have been hit fairly hard. Thanks @WCSBelize, #Belize Maya Forest Trust, & Spanish Creek Wildlife Sanctuary for partnering with us

A successful week of #hicatee surveys has come to an end. We even caught our biggest one yet, weighing it at 13.8 kg!! Historic data records the largest known hicatee to have weighed a whopping 22kg!

Here's a goofy male hicatee to brighten your day. Hicatee are one of the few #turtles with really strong color differences between males and females. Females have chocolate brown heads, whereas males have heads that are yellow, orange, grey, or green.
