During last month’s visit to the 3D Printing Nerd's studio, we brought along our FR-PC to test its self-extinguishing properties. Today’s UTM showdown features two high-performance polymers: PEKK-A and PSU. Both are known for their toughness, but their failure modes under stress told a fascinating story. The PEKK-A sample, an amorphous beast renowned for its chemical and thermal resistance, stretched significantly before succumbing to the tensile force. Interestingly, the break occurred near the bottom, right where it had previously encountered a localized heat source. This suggests that even a small thermal event can create a point of weakness in this otherwise resilient material. The PSU (Polysulfone) sample, known for its rigidity and electrical insulation properties, behaved differently. It exhibited less elongation overall and fractured more abruptly, with the break occurring squarely in the middle of the test specimen. This indicates a more uniform distribution of stress until its ultimate tensile strength was reached. This comparative test highlights the unique characteristics of these two advanced materials. PEKK-A’s amorphous structure allows for greater elongation before failure, but it can be sensitive to prior thermal exposure. PSU, with its higher modulus, tends to fail more directly under tensile load. Understanding these nuances is crucial for material selection in demanding engineering applications.
