One of the biggest myths about multilingual children is that they simply “lose interest” in their home language. The reality is often much more complex. Children usually don’t abandon a language because they dislike it. They stop using it when they no longer see a reason to use it. Language survives when it remains meaningful, useful, and connected to real relationships. That’s why preserving a home language isn’t just about teaching words. It’s about creating opportunities, experiences, and emotional connections that make the language matter. In Episodes 217–218 of the Languages Pedagogy Podcast, Yulia Akhmetova explains why so many children drift away from their heritage language and what families can do to keep it alive across generations. 🎧 This conversation may completely change how you think about bilingualism, language maintenance, and family language planning. En die ‘homelanguage’ is Spaans, die andere wereldtaal. Wie ooit in de VS was weet dat in grote delen van het zuiden (Florida op kop) Spaans nagenoeg de lingua franca is.

Nobody should deliberately target schools that offer homelanguage based education. This should be available to everybody not just English home language learners.

Why is it that most Afrikaans speaking people that went to Afrikaans schools can speak better English than most other second language English speakers. There is no reason why you can't be educated in your homelanguage and still be fluent in English.

Maybe they are also proud of their homelanguage and want their children to be taught in their homelanguage.
