👨⚕️ Enrico Sertoli (1842–1910): When Morphology Means Function
Long before routine stains, immunohistochemistry, or electron microscopy, a young Italian physician named Enrico Sertoli made a discovery that would only be fully recognized nearly a century later.
🧠 Who Was He?
Born in Sondrio, Italy, he graduated in Medicine from the University of Pavia.
In 1865, at just 23 years old, he published in Il Morgagni journal his landmark paper:
“Dell’esistenza di particolari cellule ramificate nei canalicoli seminiferi del testicolo umano”
(On the existence of branched cells in the seminiferous tubules of the human testis).
In this pioneering study, he first described the sustentacular cells of the testis, later named Sertoli cells in his honor.
🔬 Microscopy in the 19th Century
Using a Belthle microscope with achromatic lenses and corrosive sublimate fixation (no microtome or modern staining), Sertoli identified cellular niches, the organization of the seminiferous epithelium, and proposed a structural and nutritive function for these cells.
🗣️ Famous quote:
“Form acquires its real importance when it is acknowledged as a function.”
— Enrico Sertoli
🧬 Lasting Scientific Contributions
Today, we know that Sertoli cells:
🔸 Nourish and support germ cells.
🔸 Form the blood–testis barrier.
🔸 Regulate the hormonal microenvironment required for spermatogenesis.
🔸 Are involved in phagocytosis of residual bodies.
🔸 Play key roles in immune privilege and male fertility.
📚 Legacy
Despite its importance, Sertoli’s discovery was largely ignored during his lifetime. Only in the 1950s–1970s was his work rediscovered and appreciated through the studies of Teilum, Clermont, and Hess.
His name is now immortalized in multiple medical entities:
🧪 Examples:
• Sertoli cells
• Sertoli cell tumor
• Sertoli-only cell syndrome
• Undifferentiated Sertoli cells in gonadal dysgenesis
