Glad to welcome great nat'l nonprofit & philanthropic leaders with @IndSector holding meetings in New Mexico this week. Charitable nonprofits in NM & across the U.S. play an increasingly essential partnership role to gov't to meet the needs & lift the aspirations of communities.

thegivingreview.com/trust-in… @GivingReview co-editor @mhartmannmke notes tension evinced by @IndSector (IS) survey data about trust in nonprofits and their involvement in politics and elections—“not so much among Americans answering its questions, but within its own positions on them. Both the survey respondents and IS, according to its data, have concerns about nonprofit charities’ direct involvement in political elections. IS is also concerned about how such involvement adversely affects the level of trust in all nonprofits. “Americans, according to the IS data, also sure seem skittish about—distrustful of—charities’ supposedly nonpartisan voter-registration and many other election- and politically adjacent activities. IS, not so much; in fact, it actually wants them to engage in more of it, seeing Americans’ distrust of them in this context as a challenge to be met and overcome. “The answers to IS’s various survey questions beg another, of IS: why less worry about what those purportedly charitable voter-registration and election-adjacent activities are doing to trust in nonprofits?”

Inspired and energized after Day 1 at the @IndSector National Summit in Atlanta, connecting with new colleagues who are championing social impact. Courtney English, Chief of Staff for the @CityofAtlanta, reminded us that we must be sellers of hope — especially now, when the social impact sector isn’t just filling gaps, but standing as the cornerstone of community infrastructure and innovation. Dr. Rashawn Ray, Vice President and Executive Director of @AIRInforms, and Dr. Akilah Watkins, President and CEO of Independent Sector, challenged us to think deeply about what it means to lead with equity: 💬 “When they go low, we go local.” We must move from being equity learners to equity advocates, recognizing that social interactions add up to social sediment. Their call to action resonated: • How do we prevent negative or uneven sediment from forming? • How do we become equity brokers who courageously push for the changes our communities deserve? Excited to continue the conversation on Day 2 on ways to be brave, intentional, and hopeful in our pursuit of a better, more equitable world. #ISNationalSummit #SocialImpact #CivicEngagement #EquityInAction #CommunityLeadership #Atlanta #CommunityEngagement #Nonprofit #IndependentSector @DiscoverAtlanta

Honored to be the youngest presenter today at the @IndSector National Summit, a national gathering of nonprofit philanthropic leaders working to make communities stronger. I helped lead a panel called “Gen Z at the Helm” with Beth Pann (@PointsofLight) Esha Venkat (@joinnest4). Whether it’s on the field or in the community, leadership is about showing up and making a difference. 🌍 #GenZLeaders #PointsOfLight #IndependentSector #Leadership #AthleteActivist #StudentAthlete #Changemaker #TeamWork #PurposeBeyondTheGame

“More women leaving the workforce means fewer public servants providing food assistance, health care, and essential public services that millions of Americans depend on,” said Akilah Watkins, CEO of @IndSector. More than 212,000 women have left the workforce since January — even as men gained jobs. With women making up two-thirds of nonprofit staff, the stakes for the sector are enormous. phlnthrp.com/4fOmpf6

A government shutdown is likely to add stress to nonprofits that have been grappling with federal cuts since the start of the year, advocacy groups warned. "We hope that cooler heads will prevail," Ben Kershaw of @IndSector said. However, the ordeal of waiting to see if the government will shut down is adding to the stress that many nonprofits were already feeling after months of turmoil. "No matter what happens, it is a massive waste of resources for the nonprofit sector." The Chronicle's @StepBeasley reports: phlnthrp.com/3Kq9WCZ

Opinion: Kirk’s killing is unleashing new attacks on civil society. We must respond with bravery. Political violence must never become a pretext for crushing a strong and independent nonprofit sector, writes @BenSoskis. phlnthrp.com/4mYgnLF Soskis is a 2025 Visiting Scholar at @IndSector and a senior research associate in the Center on Nonprofits and Philanthropy at the @urbaninstitute.

It would be a disgrace if meaningful contributions for people in need will be used to fund the Administration's priorities, including their tax breaks for billionaires. Read what the @IndSector said about how the Big, Ugly Bill would hurt charitable giving:
