Israel cannot fight a war of attrition. Its theory of war has been shaped by quick victories. This is Israel's strength. This is also Israel's Achilles heel. When Israel bombed Iran, its primary objective was to destroy the nuclear facilities. But if I knew that Israel alone cannot destroy Iran's nuclear facilities, everyone knew it. So the plan was to go in, destroy diplomacy and drag the US in. The sub-objective was to derail the coherence of the Iranian state and push for state collapse. That's why Israel killed almost all of Iran's top chain of command. It wanted to blunt Iran's fire power, instil fear in its Generals and push for chaos in Tehran. It failed spectacularly as Iran's government recovered swiftly from the initial blow. I think Israel was prepared for a massive initial missile attack from Iran. But what Tehran did was to launch barrages of small numbers of missiles, overpowering and degrading Israel's air defence. If Israel wanted a quick victory, Iran was prepared to fight an aerial war of attrition. On Saturday, after the US joined the war, Israel sounded out to the Americans that they wanted to wrap up the war quickly. America was not involved in regime change. Israel alone cannot sustain a long war. Its air defences were running low. The airport remained largely shut. It was spending millions every day for offence and defence, besides suffering damage and destruction of infrastructure. Netanyahu said publicly that Israel would meet its war objectives quickly. Iran had earlier said that it would stop if Israel stopped. But after the American attack, during talks through the Qataris (the Qatar PM talked to the Iranians) Tehran said it would accept a ceasefire only after hitting American bases. On Monday night, Iran staged the attack at US bases in Qatar and Iraq. Apparently Iran had given prior info to Doha, which shared it with the Americans. Immediately after the Iranian attack, Trump signalled deescalation. Within hours he declared a ceasefire. This meant, both Israel and Iran had six hours to wrap up the war. Israel carried out massive air strikes in Iran. Tehran responded with at least six waves of ballistic missiles, which hit several places, including Beersheba, killing at least 4 and wounding more than 20. Trump was angry with Israel's strike. And he exploded when Israel sent warplanes again to Iran in retaliation for a missile attack in the morning. The US says it has destroyed Iran's nuclear facilities. But experts believe that at best the US has setback the nuclear programme. Even if the US has destroyed the nuclear facilities, as John Kerry said, you can't bomb the knownow out of the minds of the Iranians. The Iranian government has not just survived, it has consolidated support amid strong nationalist sentiments. When Saddam invaded Iraq in 1980, a year after the revolution, he and his backers thought the war could push the clergy out of power. Instead, the prolonged war allowed Khomeini to consolidate power at home. Israel's missile defence invincibility was broken. The claims by Israel and America that Iran's ballistic missiles were destroyed were ridiculed by the Iranians by launching deadly missile barrages towards Israel in the final hours. Netanyahu was insulted by Trump who ordered Israeli jets, on social media, to turn away -- they obliged, after carrying out a symbolic strike. Iran has lost generals, suffered civilian casualties and material destruction. Its nuclear programme has been set back. But it has survived to fight another day whereas Isarel, which faced the heaviest missile attack in its history, failed to meet any of its objectives.
