Our story is 20 years in the making. And to tell it all, was our ED, @carole_gaita marking these milestones. The last two decades have seen our evolution, growing from strength to strength. From a small team of 3 to a team of 13, that is largely young. Our institutionalisation and being embedded into the political and governance fabric of our country, catalysing civic engagement and mainstreaming values of openness, inclusion and accountability within Parliament, are a statement of faith, courage and deep love for the country. We have innovated, growing from a blog, a fully-fledged website with information on parliamentarians. Along this journey we have explored various innovative ideas, developing various civic tech tools - from Dokeza, a searchable Hansard, KnowYourRep, Vote Compass and the Promise Tracker. Very soon, citizens, media, civil society and political actors can look forward to an enhanced website experience that allows access to prompt analysis on their representatives' contributions and performance in Parliament. We have deepened our work in devolved units and at a regional level. We have had the honour to inform dialogues and discourse on regional and global platforms, cementing our position as a trailblazer in the global community of Parliamentary Monitoring Organisations (PMOs). "If last two years have taught us something, it’s the need for continued engagement and dialogue. And so we shall continue to create these spaces, off and online, to foster conversations between citizens and their representatives, being bold as always and pragmatic when the moments call for it." - Caroline affirmed. This growth and impact would not have possible without the support of our friends and partners in kind and through resources that have strengthened our institution. As our ED, @carole_gaita concluded, she called on us to champion for Representation in Practice. "Democracy thrives when you have the consent of the governed. 2022…. As the 12th Parliament adjourns ‘sine die’ and we release the first institutional scorecard, assessing its legislative output. In a bid to uphold ethics and integrity in our politics and in the lead up to the election, a second red-carded list of aspirants is released by the National Integrity Alliance. We set out to mobilise as many youth as possible to register and shape the outcome of the 2022 general election through the #GTokeze campaign. Along with the campaign, came two very instrumental civic tech tools - #KnowYourRep and the #VoteCompass. The general election is held and there’s a new administration. Women make history in the election marking the highest number of them landing elective seats – 29 single member constituencies and 7 gubernatorial seats, a milestone we tracked and documented. New leadership takes shape in the legislature amid disputes on who the majority side in both houses rightfully was. Kenya mourns its 3rd President – Mwai Kibaki while the longest-reigning British monarch Queen Elizabeth II rests. Na kama nchi, tulijikunakuna kweli… And that same year, we expand our geographical scope and go regional. The Africa Parliamentary Monitoring Organisations Network (APMON) is established with @mzalendowatch as the current chair…. Not too long after the new administration takes shape, graft cases against key government officials start getting withdraw. A worrying pattern for the fight against corruption in Kenya. The country was falling in love with Nyashinski’s “Malaika” 😇🥰 The Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) 🚉 is officially inaugurated by President Uhuru Kenyatta amid transparency concerns over the contract. A second general election 🗳️ under the new Constitution is upon Kenyans. Another round of Raila and Uhuru going head to head… In the lead up to the election, Mzalendo among other partners under the National Integrity Alliance launch the first 🛑 Red-Card Campaign that calls duty-bearers such as IEBC, EACC and political parties to bar aspirants who were unfit for office from vying…. We expand our civic tech innovations with the first ever #KnowYourRep that gives voters information about all gazetted candidates… The presidential result is contested at the 👨🏾‍⚖️👩🏾‍⚖️Supreme Court, leading to a landmark ruling that would see Kenya become the 1st African Country to nullify a presidential election result. A re-run of the presidential election, Raila Odinga boycotts the election. Uhuru Kenyatta lands his second term… Opposition MPs boycott Uhuru Kenyatta speech during the opening of the 12th Parliament and some expressed their disapproval of the administration during their swearing in. #MzalendoAt20 #TheShadowHansard #EyeOnParliamentKE
