Today at Hola Stadium in Tana River County, I presided over the launch and distribution of two solar-powered milk coolers under the Livestock Value Chain Support Project (LVCSP), a key initiative under the Government’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA). The project aims to improve milk preservation, reduce post-harvest losses, and increase incomes for dairy farmers and pastoralist communities. The initiative is expected to contribute to a 30% increase in household incomes among targeted dairy farming and pastoralist communities, directly benefiting more than 600 farmers in Tana River county through improved preservation, value addition, and expanded market access.
The milk coolers will enable farmers to aggregate up to 2,000 litres of milk daily, valued at approximately KSh 98,000. Annually, this will save about 730,000 litres of milk worth KSh 35.8 million while also reducing energy costs through the use of solar power.
I commended the partnership between the National Government, the County Government, and stakeholders in strengthening the dairy value chain. I also urged farmers to join cooperatives to improve value addition, market access, and productivity.
I reiterated President William Ruto’s position that Government funding will prioritize productivity over consumption. I further highlighted ongoing programmes such as universal healthcare, MSME support, affordable housing, and last-mile connectivity aimed at improving livelihoods.
Tana River County Commissioner Mr. Joseph Mwangi Wamuti addressed concerns over security, ongoing rains, and flooding in the region, urging residents to move to safer grounds. He also encouraged farmers to adopt modern farming methods and improved dairy breeds to boost milk production and quality.
During the handover to Hola Milk Vendor and Delta Dairy Cooperative, I noted that bulk milk coolers are not just storage facilities, but economic empowerment hubs that create jobs, improve household incomes, support value addition, and strengthen Kenya’s dairy sector.
In attendance were the Tana River County Commissioner, Chief Officer Livestock, fisheries and cooperative Development Kanchoru Golo, Deputy Sub county Administrator Sigal Dido, alongside other county and government officials.
