Gov. Newsom has signed the CA Fair Elections Act🎉! This historic win moves us closer to stopping big money in politics & building a fairer, more transparent democracy for Californians. Huge thanks to @LWVC, @CACleanMoney, @SenatorUmberg, and our members for making this happen!

Thank you. Let’s work together on this. Below I propose a nonpartisan list of things we can and should implement immediately to fully restore fairness and confidence in elections. This benefits us all.

I admire my friend & State Senator @BenAllenCA ambitions to make elections in California “cleaner & fairer.” However, if we want to eliminate “dark money,” let’s start with unions especially teacher’s unions. Refuse their $ Then: 1. Voter ID 2. End universal mail in ballots 3. For all mail in ballots by request, require secure ID (not signature) of the VOTER (not witness) to prevent others from filling and signing for the intended voter 4. Make all ballot harvesting or possession of another individual’s ballot for any reason a felony 5. Robust citizenship verification 6. Annual cleaning of voter rolls with 3rd party verification 7. Force every county to make its ballot reading/counting software FULLY transparent for 3rd party independent analysis. Outlaw “we wrote our own software and no you can’t see it.” 8. Outlaw ALL campaign contributions for state and local elections from public sector employee unions. Including PAC & SuperPAC spending as permitted by SCOTUS decision. This would include teacher’s unions (again, in the meantime, all candidates must set an example by refusing such $). 9. End the concept of “election month” and move back to the concept of a real “Election Day”. Make it a holiday or mandate 3 hours pay for voting. 10. Mandate ALL ballots be counted before midnight. 11. End COVID era ballot drop boxes which are subject to tampering or abuse. 12. For mail in ballots, if not received by end of election (8p) on Election Day, they’re NOT counted. Want to use one? Mail it in early OR hand it to a polling place. We have many. Such measures would restore & build much needed trust in voting and elections that will improve voter turnout and confidence in election outcomes. Thoughts?

Now it is time for the voters to decide. Special elections often see low/unrepresentative turnout. The LWVC Education Fund will work to ensure that the full diversity of California voters participate on November 4, 2025, with access to trusted, unbiased information. (8/8)

Donald Trump is using common tactics of an aspiring dictator. Divide opposition, pit people against each other, sow distrust. A well-worn tactic is scapegoating women. In recent weeks, LWVC has received thousands of misogynistic, hate-filled emails. (5/8)

The process for the redistricting in California differs from Texas, but the LWVC recognizes the importance of staying aligned with our national League and with state and local Leagues, such as in Texas, that are, or may soon be, in court challenging unfair maps. (3/8)

Dear League of Women Voters @lwvc Your letter about California Redistricting, by choosing to accommodate racism, does nothing but affirm segregationist views. Ida B. Wells so powerfully stated, such actions only “confirm white women’s segregationist views” lwvc.org/opposition-mid-cycl…

This is from the website of the California League of Women Voters, not a Republican or conservative group by any means: “Governor Newsom is reportedly considering mid-decade redistricting to redraw California’s congressional lines – not to serve the people, but to play political revenge games with Texas. This is gerrymandering, plain and simple. And it would be a dangerous step backward. Californians fought hard to end the days of shady, backroom map deals. In 2008, we passed Proposition 11 to create the Citizens Redistricting Commission, an independent body that puts people over politics when drawing district lines. That system works. In fact it’s considered the national  gold standard. And it belongs to the voters – not to the Governor or any political party. The LWVC was a proponent of Prop 11, and continues to advocate for fair redistricting throughout California.”

Amazingly the often liberal League of Women Voters is also calling it a sham. “Governor Newsom is reportedly considering mid-decade redistricting to redraw California’s congressional lines – not to serve the people, but to play political revenge games with Texas. This is gerrymandering, plain and simple. And it would be a dangerous step backward. Californians fought hard to end the days of shady, backroom map deals. Even liberals know this is unconstitutional. This is from the website of the California League of Women Voters, not a Republican or conservative group by any means: “Governor Newsom is reportedly considering mid-decade redistricting to redraw California’s congressional lines – not to serve the people, but to play political revenge games with Texas. GFC has joined with @CACommonCause, @LWVC and other good government organizations in signing a letter of opposition to any effort to undo CA’s Independent Redistricting Commission, which @CAgovernor has threatened in response to gerrymandering efforts in Texas. Needless to say, two wrongs don’t make a right.
