It depends very much on what you call "#Linguistics" :-) There are many schools & there have been even more in the past. Anyhow, I would not call #தொல்காப்பியன் a linguist. I call him a #LanguageProfessional.

This seems to show that #தொல்காப்பியம் was used as a #TEACHINGtool, instructing people how to become a Tamil #LanguageProfessional, alias one among the #புலவர் capable of creating #செய்யுள் "that which is MADE" (derived from செய்தல்). That's what a poet is! :-))
