š¤ What does Black identity mean to you?
Black identity is not one-dimensional. It spans many shades, experiences, and stories. Yet, those who identify as Black often face challenges:
Bi-racial individuals can struggle to fit into cultures that question their authenticity. Assumptions about skin tone or appearance erase the richness of identity.
Why canāt someone simply be both races, rather than forced to choose?
Pop culture often amplifies these struggles. Think of Drake, whose lighter skin tone has led to debates about his āBlackness,ā compared to Kendrick Lamar, who is celebrated for embracing darker skin tones in his music and imagery. These comparisons highlight how skin tone impacts perception, even within the Black community.
⨠Black identity is as complex and beautiful as the people who embody it. Letās celebrate that complexity and unlearn the assumptions we make.
