Bringing 20 years in child safety, a broadcasting career with ITV, Sky News and the BBC, and two decades behind the Dot Com education programme, Sharon Evans (nee Doughty) is helping transform the Sir David Amess Children’s Parliament UK from a beautiful idea into a living, evolving national platform for children’s voices.
On Friday, 17th April 2026, Sharon (wearing blue jacket) welcome the 'National Mace Tour' to Fairways Frimary School in Leigh on Sea Essex and ran a full day Democracy download for the children. The Children's Champion, Amanda Frolich (Action Amanda) joined her in front of the school where the 'Democracy Song' brought the house down!
Children from the youngest age possible, are now living Sir David Amess's dream of "getting involved" and "getting politics".
Introduced to the project by music impressario Denis Ingoldsby, Sharon’s added structure, safeguarding depth and narrative clarity - and a visual immersive ceremonial performance symphony - placing the Sir David Amess Children’s Parliament UK at the intersection of education, policing, policy and participation.
This May-June 2026, Children’s Parliament UK is sponsoring the Essex Police Child Safety Tour of Essex, feeding into a 20,000‑child livestream debate on safety, rights and responsibility - giving children a serious, structured way to question and collaborate with real decision‑makers.
At the heart of it all is the Evans family of Teddington - now effectively the First Family of the Children’s Parliament. Sharon’s former‑policeman husband brings frontline safeguarding insight - and literally 'Police protection' - while Joshua and Amelia, as National Teen Ambassadors, model youth leadership for younger pupils. It’s a genuine family affair in public service.
Now in its fifth anniversary year, under Patron Anna Firth and Sharon Evans, with the guiding hands of Acting CEO and co-founder Andrew Fox, Board director Roderick Thackray, Chairman Derek Laud FRSA and board director Natasha Leith-Smith, the Children’s Parliament is:
-Building a national programme of elections
-Creating an education framework that sits alongside the curriculum
Using live events and a National Mace Tour to evolve and stress‑test the concept in real schools
This is an Amess legacy project that’s become a match made in Heaven between schools, police, policymakers and pupils. Real politicians, real policy and real safeguarding practice - all in the same room as children who are learning not just about democracy, but how to live it.
