It is genuinely shocking to hear a former Western prime minister describe free speech as a “weapon of war.”
If Jacinda Ardern believes free speech is something to be surrendered to political leaders so they can guide citizens on what to think about war, climate or public policy — that should alarm anyone who values liberal democracy.
Free speech is not a weapon of war.
It is the shield of democracy.
It is the mechanism by which citizens:
▪️ Question government
▪️ Challenge official narratives
▪️ Expose mistakes
▪️ Debate science and policy
▪️ Remove leaders peacefully
When political leaders frame speech as dangerous, what they are often saying is dissent is dangerous.
History shows us the pattern:
First, speech is labelled harmful.
Then it is regulated “for safety.”
Then it is policed for “misinformation.”
Then it is punished when it challenges power.
That is not compassion.
That is control.
New Zealand under Ardern saw aggressive speech regulation debates, expanded state authority over information during crises, and a political culture that increasingly blurred disagreement with harm.
Democracy depends on citizens being free to think for themselves — not being “taught what to think” by leaders.
The moment politicians argue that freedom of expression must be curtailed so governments can better manage public opinion, we move from liberal democracy toward managed democracy.
Free speech is messy.
It is uncomfortable.
It allows bad ideas to circulate.
But it also allows bad governments to be removed.
Calling it a “weapon” flips reality on its head.
The real danger is not citizens speaking freely.
The real danger is governments deciding which truths are permitted.
