From all the project management and company running duties back to the trenches for a while. 🔫⛑ Literally! Trenches of Everon in
#ArmaReforger by
@bohemiainteract. And back to my roots where my videogame localization career started all those years ago - localization testing. 🎮
Back in the day, I originally started as a videogame localization tester for local Czech videogame publishing companies (Computer Games Distribution and TopCD) and even had an internship and a localization testing gig (Battlefield 4!) at
@EA in Spanish Madrid. And I had a blast! Videogame localization testers are usually the first ones who see the translated text in the game, and their job is to ensure correct and contextually appropriate implementation, to edit, and suggest improvements. 🖱🖥
Now, I am testing the second pass of the Czech localization of tutorials and the Conflict game mode of Arma Reforger. The first pass was done by the extended team of
@ContextHeroes, but I just had to jump in personally at least for the second pass to verify the state of the Czech localization, and of course to enjoy the new version of Everon myself. I have hundreds of hours in the original Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis (now ARMA: Cold War Assault) under my belt, so visiting old places reimagined feels like coming home in Arma Reforger's Everon and it brings back fond memories! 💭
Localization testing is a necessary part of the resulting quality and is often disregarded by indie game companies due to budget constraints. Well, understandably so. Is localization testing a luxury? For some studios it is, but for AAA games it's a necessity. AAA games have to clock in hundreds, if not thousands of hours of localization testing per language, often spanning months of work and involving multiple team members, to ensure top quality.🔝 Even if your budget is constrained, allocate at least a few hours per language to test the very basics. That's simply a must.
And what do the localization testers hunt for? 🏹 In short, anything which is to the detriment of the quality of the final localization. For example:
- Technical localization bugs which prevent gameplay progress
- Corrupted fonts
- Corrupted variables
- Overlong texts, cut-offs, overlaps, text out of bounds
- Untranslated text or text in a wrong language
- Grammar mistakes, typos
- Terminology inconsistencies
- Contextual errors, mistranslations
And many, many others...
For Arma Reforger, Context Heroes are currently conducting the second pass of loc testing for all supported languages, and players can look forward to more localization tweaks and fixes in the future updates! 🚀
