Multi-Party Block Construction (MPBC) is currently append-only. This has nice properties, like blockspace utilization and block value strictly increasing. A limit is that only non-contentious or self-contained TXs can be appended. Coverage can be extended in numerous ways: (1) More transactions can become self-contained, such as through EIP-8272. (2) The scope of the mechanism can extend to contentious transactions. Extending the scope of the mechanism is complex, as it requires taking into account interdependencies between transactions. But it's doable, and it's great that there is already early discussion on it on the MPBC post.

Quality blockspace has to be available, accessible and provide predictable execution. Ethereum has nice properties: (1) Availability: 100% uptime. (2) Access: Multiple lanes incl. FOCIL (hard guarantee) and MPBC (economic guarantees). (3) Execution: More self-contained txs (EIP-8272). Framing: The cadence at which it is allocated (slot time). Faster slot times are a way to get more out of the substrate.

Letting other builders contribute to the winning builder's block is the first step towards addressing some of the shortcomings of the current PBS market structure. MPBC works because it extends PBS rather than replacing it, which is also why it can actually ship.

Building towards Multi-Party Block Construction By: - remosm - Michael M. - Kubi M. - Alex T. - Drew V. 🔗 ethresear.ch/t/24975 Highlights: - MPBC is a redesign of out-of-protocol block construction that moves from single-builder (monolithic) blocks to multi-builder blocks assembled from multiple contributors, widening transaction inclusion to a shared view across builders. - The mechanism is additive: an operator starts from the highest-bid single-party “base block” and appends eligible, non-conflicting transactions (and missing service transactions) from other opted-in builders, then submits whichever block pays most at delivery time. - MPBC targets structural gaps in today’s PBS pipeline—especially missed/filtered orderflow, winner-take-all centralization pressures, and weak support for service transactions—by creating multiple inclusion paths in the same slot. - It aims to improve user experience and economics by increasing blockspace utilization and predictability (less spillover into future slots, less defensive overbidding), while also improving censorship resistance and overall robustness through more diverse participants (builders competing operators). - Key open questions remain, notably how to distribute the newly created surplus value among builders/operators/proposers, how to reduce trust in operators (e.g., TEEs/FHE/economic mechanisms), and how to expand beyond append-only/non-contentious transactions; sub-slots are highlighted as a scaling direction for more frequent multi-party contributions and faster preconfirmations. ELI5: Ethereum blocks are usually put together by one “builder” who wins an auction. That’s like letting only one chef cook the whole meal: if that chef never saw your ingredient (your transaction) or doesn’t want to use it, you may have to wait. This article proposes Multi-Party Block Construction (MPBC), where the best block so far becomes a “base,” and then an “operator” can safely add extra non-conflicting transactions from other builders—like letting multiple chefs contribute dishes to the same meal. The goal is to get more useful transactions included each block, make inclusion more predictable, improve resilience against censorship/outages, and support extra services (like preconfirmations) without relying on a single builder’s cooperation.

Testing pilot for MPBC has been running at Titan Relay for a few months now and the reference implementation is fully open source at gattaca-com/helix and gattaca-com/relay-sim-reth. Over the next few weeks we're going to be working on some big optimisations and will start actively delivering multi-party blocks to ethereum.

Excited to present Multi-Party Block Construction (MPBC)! MPBC allows multiple builders to contribute to a single block. -> Blockspace allocation is widened to the view of multiple builders. -> TXs can be included even when filtered by individual builders. MPBC is strictly additive. Builders can only contribute transactions. As a result, block value and blockspace utilization increases. This means more predictable and faster inclusion for users. This initial design reflects the outcomes of multiple blockspace forum workshops, and conversations with many teams across Ethereum. This is a collaborative design to improve the transaction journey, improve Ethereum, improve user experience. All contributions welcome!
