The great Rabbi Maimonides says that it is permissible and virtuous to murder a snitch (moseir) to prevent him from reporting your crimes to the authorities.

Agree, but saying that context "is rarely necessary for fruitful reading" is a bit too strong. Knowing the language at the time a book was written seems necessary. (Why did Maimonides write the Guide in Judaeo-Arabic?) PAW is all about context. Context understood correclty points to authorial intent.
