A massive factor is time. In my observation, 12mos maternity seems to do it. Women need time to be mothers. At my place of work, we offer 12mos matleave at fill pay. 6mos patleave at full pay. Babies are popping out everywhere

I work in consulting. I use GPT as my team of analysts now. It produces good enuf output while never bitching about whether team is DEI enough for their approval or why we don’t have a matleave policy like Google’s. No idea how consulting will train the next class cuz I ain’t.

Form personal observation, one of the biggest helps isn’t just childcare, but matleave. 12mos matleave, plus 3-6 patleave, at full pay, seems to work wonders. The firm I work for have this and babies are popping out like no tomorrow. How could more companies afford this though? And could the gov just offer the equivalent in direct govt benefit, like child benefit? Well, we can’t expect all companies to offer this, and we can’t just give people money to have babies as that produced perverse incentives. How about this: corporate matleave and patleave costs can be 100% reclaimed from HMRC. That way, people are incentivised to work, while companies aren’t overly punished for offering the benefit. Thoughts?

I think the 1-3month or less matleave norm can mean the initialization into parenthood is so unpleasant people can never imagine wanting to do *that* thing full time, but really it’s like imagining doing your first month in a new job in a new industry ceaselessly

The argument isn’t about whether 6mos pat leave is too long or not, the question is whether it should be enforced. It is simple: any rule like mandatory matleave/patleave/holiday or whatever should be an agreed minimum, just like minimum wage was meant to be. It is then up to business and the labour market to compete to offer the best T&Cs for their workers. That way, companies who can’t afford to benefits don’t unduly suffer. E.g. the company I work for offers 12mo matleave at full salary, and 6mos patleave full salary. This is the choice of the business in order to attract talent. And it works. More importantly, babies are popping out like nothing.
Six months paternity leave. Too excessive? Another increase in a company’s cost base. And how is that person’s job going to be covered? What about people who don’t have kids? They just do the extra work of the person who’s off?

Absolute stunner of a day 😍 Started off at @coresetuk getting some culture and inspiration into me and then took myself for some lunch in the sun before doing the last of the pre-baby shopping and finishing my hospital bag 🥰 #easterholidays #matleave

Just unpacked the car from the week and this is the result. I have the most incredibly generous students and colleagues and as much as it's been incredibly overwhelming, I feel so grateful 🥲💕 #matleave

So something similar happened with our morning show years ago. The weather person went on matleave and the person who replaced her stayed when she returned and has been on tv for 10 years now. As much as people wanna act like 3 isn't an issue, it kinda is. Timing is everything
