Meru County is betting big on avocados. In a move aimed at transforming household incomes and expanding Kenya’s agricultural export base, the government has launched a campaign targeting the planting of one million avocado trees across Mitunguu/Nkuene and surrounding areas of Meru County. The initiative is anchored on a simple but powerful idea: connect smallholder farmers to growing international demand and turn agriculture into a more reliable pathway to wealth creation. According to Forestry Principal Secretary Gitonga Mugambi, Kenya has secured expanded market access for avocados in major destinations including China and Japan. The challenge now is no longer market access, but production. That is where Meru comes in. With its favourable climate, fertile soils and strong agricultural tradition, the county is well positioned to become one of Africa’s leading avocado-producing regions. The significance of the programme extends beyond tree planting. If properly implemented, it could increase household incomes, create jobs across the value chain, strengthen Kenya’s foreign exchange earnings and deepen the country’s position as a global horticultural powerhouse. The government has committed to sourcing quality seedlings, while farmers are expected to plant, nurture and commercialize the crop. The bigger message is clear: Kenya’s future agricultural growth will increasingly depend on high-value export crops capable of connecting rural farmers to global markets. For Meru, the one million avocado tree campaign is not just about agriculture. It is about building wealth from the soil. #AvocadoFarming #MeruCounty #Agriculture #FoodSecurity #Horticulture #ExportMarkets #KenyaFarming #Agribusiness #ValueAddition #RuralDevelopment #WealthCreation #KenyaExports #ChinaMarket #JapanMarket #FarmersFirst #AgriculturalTransformation

Tharaka University (TUN) Vice-Chancellor and CEO, Prof. Peter K. Muriungi, PhD, presided over the groundbreaking ceremony for the Tharaka University Nyambene Campus at Konju Village in Tigania East Constituency, Meru County. The event brought together community members, local leaders, and stakeholders, with the area Member of Parliament, Hon. Mpuru Aburi, joining the Vice-Chancellor as a key guest during the historic occasion. As part of the ceremony, Prof. Muriungi laid the foundation stone and unveiled the Foundation Stone Plaque, marking the official commencement of the campus project. The milestone follows months of consultations, public participation, legal processes, and the eventual approval by the Tharaka University Senate (who were present) to establish the campus. Addressing the gathering, Prof. Muriungi expressed his appreciation to the residents for their warm reception and support for the University. He emphasized that the success of the campus would largely depend on the goodwill and partnership of the local community. Drawing parallels with the establishment and growth of Tharaka University, he noted that universities are national institutions that attract students, staff, and partners from diverse regions and backgrounds. He assured residents of the University's commitment to supporting and nurturing the growth of the new campus. In his remarks, Hon. Mpuru Aburi described the project as a historic achievement for Tigania East, noting that it is the first university campus to be established in the constituency since Kenya attained independence. He observed that the campus would expand access to higher education, create opportunities for local youth, and stimulate socio-economic development within the region. Hundreds of residents attended the colorful ceremony and welcomed the initiative as a transformative development project that is expected to accelerate growth and investment in the area. The event culminated in a special cultural honor as Prof. Muriungi was installed as a Njuri Ncheke elder. The symbolic gesture showed the community's acceptance of both the Vice-Chancellor and the University, reaffirming support for the Nyambene Campus and its future success. #TharakaUni #nyambenecampus #highereducation #MeruCounty

Earlier this week, #IamAPHRC participated in a public forum hosted by the Meru County Department of Health, Kenya. The public participation forum provided stakeholders and the community members an opportunity to share their views on the proposed County Health Research Policy, marking an important step in its development. The proposed policy aims to streamline research processes, strengthen ethical oversight, and ensure research evidence informs planning and decision-making. With this policy, Meru County is laying a strong foundation for more accountable, community-centered health research. This is part of #IamAPHRC’s British Academy - funded project that is strengthening the use of evidence in policy and decision-making at the county level in Kenya. #APHRC #EvidenceInAction #AdolescentHealth #ResearchForPolicy #HealthSystems #MeruCounty @amveyange @CKyobutungi @DMdiarafa @RatemoJuliet @williamsila @DorcasOdhiambo @MangwanaVJ @deborahndlovu @ndonyesarah @njerimbuthia @Chris_Maero @dia_diama @ChristineGer22 @MangwanaVJ @Hope_shete @MuliDavis @Wekesah @CharityWaweru @Waithaka_KE @isabelmutuku1 @Liz_Kimani @FlorahKarimi

This week, #IamAPHRC supported Meru County to strengthen evidence-informed policy and decision-making for adolescent and young people’s programmes through a British Academy–funded project. The convening brought together members of the Meru County Health Research Board and Research Committee, sub-county health teams from all nine sub-counties, Adolescent and Young People focal persons, and Public Health Nurses, as well as county leaders. Highlights from the engagement include: ✅ The County's first Health Research Board and Research Committee was formed. ✅ The teenage pregnancy data was reviewed. ✅ A County Health Research Policy and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) was drafted. These efforts aim to institutionalize research governance, strengthen local capacity, and embed the routine use of evidence in planning, budgeting, and program implementation, for improved adolescent health outcomes across Meru County. #APHRC #EvidenceInAction #AdolescentHealth #ResearchForPolicy #DataDrivenDecisions #HealthSystems #MeruCounty #APHRCResearch @amveyange @CKyobutungi @DMdiarafa @RatemoJuliet @williamsila @DorcasOdhiambo @MangwanaVJ @deborahndlovu @ndonyesarah @njerimbuthia @Chris_Maero @dia_diama @ChristineGer22 @agnes_kiragga @DKadengye

Spectacular colors of nature. At the bottom of Magado Crater, the ground looks almost unreal. Deep greens, milky whites, dark purples, greys, and pale blues spread across the crater floor, shaped by minerals, salt, and evaporation. These colorful pools are more than just striking — they’re where women extract salt by hand, collecting mineral-rich deposits formed by this extreme environment. It’s a place where geology, color, and daily life are tightly connected, right in the heart of the Nyambeni Range, Meru County. #PoorPreyedPregnant It's time to look at what absolute numbers mean! You will be shocked that the 50% in Samburu is a drop in the ocean for the numbers in #MeruCounty yet little to no interventions as we are lazy and don't want to interrogate the figures!

Assuming 50% of the population in #MeruCounty is women that is 750K, Its projected population of teenagers between 10 to 19 to be around 23% Meru will give us 173K teenagers. Then Samburu 40K. What is 50% of 40K for Samburu that is 20K, what is 24% of 173K for Meru 41K. ??
