Tharaka University (TUN) Vice-Chancellor and CEO, Prof. Peter K. Muriungi, PhD, presided over the groundbreaking ceremony for the Tharaka University Nyambene Campus at Konju Village in Tigania East Constituency, Meru County. The event brought together community members, local leaders, and stakeholders, with the area Member of Parliament, Hon. Mpuru Aburi, joining the Vice-Chancellor as a key guest during the historic occasion.
As part of the ceremony, Prof. Muriungi laid the foundation stone and unveiled the Foundation Stone Plaque, marking the official commencement of the campus project. The milestone follows months of consultations, public participation, legal processes, and the eventual approval by the Tharaka University Senate (who were present) to establish the campus.
Addressing the gathering, Prof. Muriungi expressed his appreciation to the residents for their warm reception and support for the University. He emphasized that the success of the campus would largely depend on the goodwill and partnership of the local community. Drawing parallels with the establishment and growth of Tharaka University, he noted that universities are national institutions that attract students, staff, and partners from diverse regions and backgrounds. He assured residents of the University's commitment to supporting and nurturing the growth of the new campus.
In his remarks, Hon. Mpuru Aburi described the project as a historic achievement for Tigania East, noting that it is the first university campus to be established in the constituency since Kenya attained independence. He observed that the campus would expand access to higher education, create opportunities for local youth, and stimulate socio-economic development within the region.
Hundreds of residents attended the colorful ceremony and welcomed the initiative as a transformative development project that is expected to accelerate growth and investment in the area.
The event culminated in a special cultural honor as Prof. Muriungi was installed as a Njuri Ncheke elder. The symbolic gesture showed the community's acceptance of both the Vice-Chancellor and the University, reaffirming support for the Nyambene Campus and its future success.
