THE PROBLEM WITH THE MOVIE DAVID: A CHRISTIAN ART MISSION The fundamental story issue at the heart of @AngelStudiosInc's #DavidMovie, billed as a Musical Adventure, which is a GREAT Christian movie but has proven not to be what it really aspired to be, a Disney Renaissance-level blockbuster success both Critically and Popularly -- apart from the actual animation which relies too heavily on CG tools resulting in nothing aesthetically exceptional -- is that it attempts, very valiantly, story-wise to straddle three different aesthetics at the top of my mind: the Jewish aesthetic; the Christian Disney hero's journey, and -- #TheBible. It's trying to sell sheep merchandise, with a sidekick lacking a comic voice, which I guess worked in #Tangled. MOST importantly theologically -- without being self-aware enough to know what it's doing theologically, it's attempting to present an #OldTestament story in light of what we know from the #NewTestament. Fine, that's what #Christians ALWAYS do. How can we not, if #Jesus is the fulfillment of the #Law and the #Prophets? However, HOWEVER, it kind of convolutes our understanding of the #Jews before their #King #Jesus arrived, and the biggest way it does this is the music aesthetic, which is why approaching a #Musical-#Screenplay is not an endeavor to be taken lightly, let alone an #animated #MusicalScreenplay. One of the critical musical sins of the piece is that it failed to develop musically the kind of negative, even often fatalistic Jewish musical tradition. Let's face it; the Jewish culture is often angry and on the verge of giving up, which drives them to action. A big reason the Jewish people are like this, I would strongly content, is a result of the predominantly minor-key music of their religion. Studies have shown that children who listen to music in a minor key all the time find themselves sad more often -- and this is the story of an entire culture, of an entire religion. In the again valiant and noble attempt to Christianize and yeah, Anglicize, our understanding of Old Testament David -- the creators' story execution fell somewhat two-dimensional, especially in light of @AngelStudiosInc work with the @thechosentv which cannot by any means be accused of presenting an authentic @JonathanRoumie - I mean Jesus -- who is now increasingly known for the #PayForPray @HallowApp. Yes, both of them, in the fine indulgence tradition of @VaticanNews . In any event, musically, what was really needed was a kind of transition between the fatalistic #Herculean notion of not living up to the Law And The Prophets in the #minorKey of David's Bethlehem, Israel -- and, perhaps the #Christian #Feminist "magic" element -- which appears in this story as David's #Mother -- an entirely different disturbing story problem -- rather than the typical Disney romantic interest ----- is, or should have been, the "magic" element that allows David to save the day by killing first #Philistine Warrior #Golliath -- and then by conquering in a more #Moana-like lame "There Is No Villain At All" Subverting-The-Disney-Formula twist -- kind of like the lame surprise villain twist in Frozen that has no setup at all (we give David more credit in this area) -- David ends up conquering his own anger for #Saul the wrongdoer. So I guess what they did to their credit, story-wise, is they combined both the twist-villain and the Moana no-villain. The point is, it's kind of what is popularly regarded these days as a tonal mishmash -- however as one who is primarily a composer I was struck by the flatness of the musical score which again just from the outset Jesus-Washes the #OldTestament musical potential, which is lazy from a musical perspective. I know that @Skydance and @Dreamworks today are basically in the business of cranking out cheap parodies of 90's @Disney movies -- as is today's Disney. And today, things pass for art that never would have in even the 90s, and the 2000's when really, art and culture died completely. However, together, with #FallMusical, #TheMovieWaltWouldMake, I believe that just as Jesus descended to hell, #Jesus can resurrect Hellywood. How do we do it? Well, it's not going to be easy. It's going to involve asking some tough questions, and paying attention to all aspects of the film, like scoring and the script, and producing movies more like Disney's Snow White was produced, and the other three or four films which were completely distinct and totally, totally stylistically discrete: #Bambi, #Fantasia, #Pinnochio, #Dumbo, and #SnowWhite. Unlike anything that had come before them, except for the fact that they were all animated. Aesthetically they were different, and per @jordanbpeterson , because they were hand-drawn, there was no "fill tool" laziness -- i.e. because everything on the screen had to be hand-drawn, nothing was left to the computers to do, absolutely no filler. No fake armies of the same #CGI @SEGA Genesis cheap characters, where only Genesis will do. I'm not criticizing the people who made Angel Studios' David as lazy. I understand the hard work that went into the music, and the story, and the animation. I'm suggesting that as much effort went into it, and as much time went into it, it became a victim of the same thing other modelT assembly-line content gets cranked off the Hellywood assembly line which produces Content like we get in milk cartons; the same as so much other stuff we've seen. If Christians want to have a mega-success, both for the benefit of Christian audiences who want a great story and a great film as much of anybody else, we need to try harder, and be BETTER than everything else going on out there. David does a lot of things right, and it is a spiritual lift. But at the end of the day, it is one more attempt to cram an #OldTestament narrative rather hastefully into first a Christian moral, visual aesthetical, and musical paradigm, and second a Disney Renaissance Paradigm. It's trying to please the Jews, the Christians, and a MassMarket. I think it's a possible goal to attain, but these days, I don't think a production timeline as limited as we had in the old days is quite good enough, as it may have passed pre-Toy Story, and even be lauded. I still hate Toy Story, I don't know why. I don't like it. I despise Toy Story, and all of Toy Story's Spawn - with the exception of Tangled -- which was part-drawn; probably could have been done even better but was already one of the most expensive animated movies of all time; and budgetary limitations probably prevented it from being better. They conceptually long-suffered that story, and Aladdin, and many Disney movies. The Little Mermaid had the unique authorship perspective of Alan Mencken and Howard Ashman; say what you want about them, they understood the medium. It's fine to #Christian-wash, to #America-wash, to #Anglicize art for American inspiration and edification. The problem comes when you're trying to serve not just two, but three masters -- The American Free Market, Pop-Christianity, And The Unforgiving Old-Testament Fictional God Of Israel unfulfilled by the Person of Jesus Christ who, we as Christians know, is the completion of the Old Testament. But the Jews didn't know that -- many still don't; and that theological ignorance, while not politically correct to bring to light, @melgibson @official_mel_gc (#MelGibson has a LOT of fake accounts these days - WHERE ARE YOU, BUDDY? @FranciscanU) -- otherwise results in a gaping story hole. The Chosen presented the Jews very sympathetically by at least having that one Jew For Jesus character who diligently sought the scriptures, in the form of at least one of the #Rabbis. I can't remember what happened to him, but they made him look both human, authentic, and true to the Jesus story. That authenticity, that sincerity, is missing -- and so David also fails on the level of being "#Sincere" in the way that Disney's primary marketing message through the 90s, @michaelEisner, was sincerity. #MelGibson knows story structure. I've only watched David once; and I still like it for the reason I like @JoelOsteen. But is it a great movie? For all of the above I have to say, "no." Granted, I'm making a movie, so I have to have higher standards than everybody. And I'm probably not making any new friends in Christian Hollywood right now. But I'm sincere, I'm authentic, and I'm one heck of an artist. As a note to other #Christian creators, David has been out for a while now; my negative comments are not going to make or break their box office, or keep anyone from seeing it at this point in time, and I have waited to comment on it intentionally for that reason. I'm a team player. I want to see Christian film succeed, obviously, as a Christian producer. On an encouraging note, Christian film has indeed come a long way. But just like the Pro-Life cause before @Potus @RealDonaldTrump, it seems like we, the good guys representing Christian film, arts and culture, are too often just trying to keep up. We're playing scrimmage when what we really need to be doing is more Death Crawls, @KendrickBros , @KirkCameron , Producer @MrsErikaKirk with the synch issues with @KidRock (great job recovering, by the way Kid Rock WOW and whew!) @dennis_quaid @reaganthemovie @TimTebow @Riley_Gaines_ @PatriciaHeaton . We need everybody to bring their A-GAME to speak the language of our culture. Less than superior isn't good enough. And art like that comes at a cost. Like @mandisaofficial , @tobymac . A cost that can't be handled by drugs or alcohol, but by our Living Lord, Jesus Christ with us, in us, manifest in us. Anyway, probably not what anybody in Christendom wants to hear, but if we want better Christian movies, we need to make Better Movies. It's unlike anything you could ever imagine, and is morally none less than an attempt to reconcile and synthesize (in terms of Screenplay/Story) the very nature of Christianity and the Graven Image which is our great JudeoChristian tradition of celluloid. You're going to love Fall Musical, @theShaneHarper, @BillMaher, @seanhannity, @MelissaJoanHart . It's human, God-inspired #ART in an age of #AI slop, otherwise known as Content, which outgoing @WaltDisneyCo CEO Bob Iger called a mere commodity, like water. The value of commodities get measured in terms of quantity; but art, like the Disney classics, the original five -- make history because there's nothing like them in the world. Kind of like our value as artists. It is not our ability to churn out the sausage that makes our careers as artists, but our ability to remain true to the desires of our hearts put there by Our Creator in a world trying so hard to snuff out everything but the incessant algorithmic noise. I'm not saying something bad has happened, but I'm REASONABLY concerned, and I think a reasonable person would be reasonably concerned.
