Map it. Scan it. Break it before the red team does. Use nmap for port discovery. Run gobuster for directory enumeration. Check your AWS S3 buckets for public access. Most breaches start with a simple misconfiguration. A forgotten test endpoint.

B. A port scanner A port scanner (e.g., Nmap) allows the administrator to remotely identify open ports and running services across multiple servers. This helps detect unnecessary or unauthorized services that should be disabled for security and performance reasons.

The question that was answered for me was from an Nmap room

Good evening ma, Over the last 12 months, I've been building my cybersecurity skills by studying networking fundamentals through Cisco Networking Academy, practicing with Nmap and Wireshark, and working on hands-on labs with Hack The Box. And I'm still learning every day.

The first time I heard about Nmap was on TryHackMe, and I used it on the attack box for network discovery and security auditing. In yesterday's class, I ran it in my own lab against a VulnHub target machine. I ran different Nmap scans and then discovered a vulnerability. The scan showed 3 open ports and Nmap also flagged something on the web server: a publicly exposed .git folder. Apparently a developer deployed a site and forgot to remove the .git folder, and anyone can pull the entire git history of the site. That means source code and configs. #CyberSecurity #LearningInPublic

You'd think they would have learned this from the research cited in the NMAP report back in 2008, almost 20 years ago now. But apparently these expensive meta-analyses are meant to cost the taxpayer millions and then get shelved where nobody will ever read them and teaching doesn't change.

Two important things to remember: 1. The USG would clarify nmap and the terminal as serious cyberweapons if they could so you cannot trust their judgement here. 2. Anthropic is clearly trying to create enough fear to get the entire industry nationalized. Mythos is just a good model, Fable was good at long-running orchestration to build complex systems autonomously with minimal intervention, as it was designed to do and as GPT 5.5 is already almost as good at. If OAI were idiots who wanted to be nationalized they could have gotten export controls on 5.5 - this is all political and has nothing to do with the actual capabilities or safety.
I’ve had a number of conversations with folks inside and outside government about the current situation with Anthropic, and here is what I believe to be true: — As we know, Anthropic publicly released its Mythos class models earlier this week under the commercial name Fable. — Fable is Mythos with guardrails. But if those guardrails fail, then you’ve exposed Mythos and its advanced cyber capabilities to people who shouldn’t have them. (Keep in mind that Anthropic itself widely promoted the idea that Mythos was a cyberweapon and needed to be regulated as such. They asked for government regulation of Mythos and championed the guardrails on Fable. If there is a vulnerability — big or small — it is Anthropic’s responsibility to patch.) — A highly credible trusted partner of both Anthropic and the USG who was testing Fable came forward with a jailbreak of those guardrails. The Admin asked Dario to fix the jailbreak or de-deploy the model. Dario refused. — In their blog post, Anthropic defended its decision by saying the jailbreak isn’t serious. That is not what the trusted partner and the USG believe; nor is that kind of minimizing language consistent with Anthropic’s brand as the AI safety company. It’s difficult to fathom how they could claim a jailbreak allowing operability of a cyber weapon could be defined as not “serious.” — In the past, Anthropic has always said that safety must be top priority and taken super seriously. In this case, Anthropic prioritized the continued offering of the consumer model over safety. — In reaction, the Admin issued the export control. The Admin did this reluctantly. It’s been very surprised that Anthropic hasn’t wanted to cooperate with a reasonable safety request (ie fixing the jailbreak issue). Anthropic’s reaction is very much at odds with their branding and ethos as a safe AI research community. — The Admin’s hope now is that Anthropic remediates the safety issue, the export control is lifted, and Fable goes back into general release. The Admin wants all of this to happen as soon as possible. It is frankly bewildered that Anthropic hasn’t wanted to comply with safety requests that it previously said were its highest priority. — Those trying to misdirect and tie this action to the prior DoW/Anthropic issues are wrong. The Admin values Anthropic’s technical capabilities and feels that this issue, while serious, should be easily resolved. The ball is in Anthropic’s court.
