🔥 Six Months Since the Palisades and Eaton Fires: A Look Back at the Response 🔥
6 months ago today, we watched as the Palisades Fire and the Eaton Fire tested our region’s resilience. These fires ignited in dry, windy conditions, threatening lives, homes, and critical infrastructure across Southern California.
The Palisades Fire, which erupted on January 7, 2025, burned approximately 23,500 acres in rugged terrain near the Santa Monica Mountains. Fire crews battled steep slopes and shifting winds to try and protect surrounding neighborhoods, with containment reached after multiple days of coordinated suppression. The fire ultimately claimed 12 lives and over 6,800 structures.
Meanwhile, the Eaton Fire, which began in the evening of January 8, 2025, scorched around 14,000 acres in the foothills near Pasadena. The Eaton fire killed 18 people and nearly 10,000 structures were burned. The fire moved quickly through dense brush and threatened dozens of homes. Firefighters worked tirelessly to establish structure protection zones, and save as many lives as they could with the limited resources at hand.
Over days and weeks of grueling work, firefighters, air support teams, and emergency managers came together to create containment lines and prevent further destruction. Mutual aid resources from across the region reinforced our local crews, showing how strong an interagency partnership can be to save lives when wildfires strike our area. Heavy winds on the 7th and 8th prevented many aircraft from getting close to the blaze.
Nearly a dozen fires erupted in Janruary, stretching water resources thin where they could not keep up with demand.
Six months later, these communities are still recovering, but their resilience is strong.
The OC Scanner team honors all who stood on the line — firefighters, first responders, and neighbors helping neighbors.
As we forge ahead and look ahead to peak wildfire season 2025, let’s remember the lessons of these fires: be prepared, stay alert, and support efforts to keep our communities fire-safe.
