𝐀 𝐛𝐚𝐛𝐲 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐧 𝐬𝐚𝐟𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐋𝐮𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐨 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐭.
Maureen Karungi is an enrolled midwife, recently started practicing at 𝐒𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐭 𝐋𝐮𝐤𝐞'𝐬 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐂𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫 4. No senior doctor on site. No internet.
During a complicated labour, she reached for the 𝐀𝐈 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐨𝐧.
The AI flagged 𝐞𝐜𝐥𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐬𝐢𝐚 as a risk to investigate. Maureen did not accept it blindly. She ran the labs. 𝐂𝐡𝐞𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐝 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐞. Checked for 𝐨𝐞𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐚. The evidence ruled it out. She made the clinical decision herself.
The mother delivered safely. The baby is alive.
This is what offline-first AI is supposed to do.
This deployment is part of a wider programme across Luweero District. At nearby 𝐊𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐤𝐚𝐦𝐮 𝐇𝐂 3, 𝐃𝐫. 𝐆𝐞𝐨𝐟𝐫𝐞𝐲 𝐒𝐞𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐤𝐚𝐧𝐛𝐨 receives over 1,500 patients every month 400 of them mothers. His team: 4 nurses.
These are not edge cases. This is the baseline.
At AI Studio Uganda, we are the 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐧𝐞𝐫 on the ground for
@Crails_Inc responsible for deployment, health worker onboarding, and field operations across 𝐋𝐮𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐨 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐭, in collaboration with 𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬 at Makerere University.
We are proud of this work. We are grateful to Maureen, Dr. Sewankanbo, and every health worker who trusted us into their practice.
This is early. We will keep building.
