Congratulations to Dr. Abhijit Mitra on receiving the prestigious NSF (USA) โ
@GoI_MeitY collaborative research grant.
Dr. Mitra has been awarded the grant to develop a cross-layer platform for correlating Optical Layer failures with the Internet Protocol (IP) layer. The project is supported under the NSFโMeitY bilateral research program and brings together an international collaboration with the University of California, Davis (funded by NSF on the US side) and IIIT-Delhi and IIT Madras (funded by MeitY, Government of India on the Indian side). The total grant amount from MeitY is โน 393.3 Lakhs, of which โน224.66 lakhs is allocated to IIIT-Delhi, while โน168.64 lakhs will support IIT Madras.
Principal Investigators:
IIIT-Delhi: Dr. Abhijit Mitra (PI), Dr. Sambuddho (Co-PI)
IIT Madras: Prof. Deepa Venkitesh (Co-PI)
University of California, Davis (USA): Prof. Dipak Ghosal (PI), Prof. Biswanath Mukherjee (Co-PI)
The project will explore machine learning (ML)โbased approaches for application-aware root-cause analysis and fault prediction in large-scale networks.
Key components of the project include:
- Development of an optical network testbed for anomaly detection and classification using ML models
- Implementation of routers and monitoring agents at both optical and network layers
- Creation of a cross-layer analytics platform to achieve holistic observability from the application layer down to the optical layer
- Design of an ML-assisted cross-layer correlator to map optical-layer failures to their impact on network-layer application performance
- Development of preemptive, application-aware fault mitigation strategies, such as intelligent re-routing
