🔒 Secure Bits 💡 𝗖𝗮𝗽𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗻𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰 𝗼𝗻 𝗪𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗼𝘄𝘀 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗲𝗿 There is an issue on a Windows Server, and I need to capture network traffic to understand what is happening. The first thought is usually: ➡️ Let’s install 𝗪𝗶𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗸 🚫 But that does not always work. In many environments I work in — especially critical infrastructure or other highly secured environments — 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗹 whatever tool you want on a server. And sometimes the target is 𝗪𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗼𝘄𝘀 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗖𝗼𝗿𝗲. Yes, there are command-line alternatives, but downloading tools and getting them into a restricted environment is often not simple at all. So what I learned to use instead is the 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝘁-𝗶𝗻 𝗻𝗲𝘁𝘀𝗵 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗲. ✅ It is straightforward, available out of the box, and that matters a lot in secure environments. 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁: netsh trace start capture=yes report=disabled 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝗻𝗲: netsh trace stop This gives you an 𝗘𝗧𝗟 file. The goal is usually not to investigate that file directly on the server, but to move it to a place where you can work with it 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝘆 — of course according to the security rules of the environment, because you do not want to 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗲 sensitive traffic. Before opening it in Wireshark, there is one extra step. Convert it with Microsoft’s 𝗲𝘁𝗹𝟮𝗽𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗻𝗴 tool: etl2pcapng nettrace.etl nettrace.pcapng ✅ Then you can open the PCAPNG file in Wireshark. For some people this may sound like 𝘂𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗿𝘆 extra work. But once you deal with Server Core, production systems, and restricted environments, this is actually very handy. On Sep 20, 2024 the Trust has sought the cancellation of the CA site that has allotted for Skill Development. However, we would like to reiterate that: 1. Siddhartha Vihar Trust is a public educational, cultural, and charitable trust. It is not a private or family trust. All institutions established are "Not For Profit." 2. Being a charitable trust, none of the trustees can benefit directly or indirectly from the trust's assets and income. 3. The main reason the trust wanted to set up a skill development and research centre in an industrial area was to provide industrial exposure to the students. 4. Only an allotment letter was issued and the lease deed was not executed. The trust has not requested or received any subsidy, financial support or reduced rate of allotment for the allotted CA site. 5. The trust was fully eligible to apply for and receive an allotment of a CA site for an educational institution. 6. However, any educational institution cannot function effectively while constantly facing malafide, baseless and politically motivated allegations. 7. The trust did not wish to be drawn into long drawn controversies which will divert attention and efforts from the primary objective of education and social service. 8. In light of the circumstances, the Trust wrote to the KIADB to withdrew our proposal and withdrew our request for a CA site for establishing a skill development and research centre on 20-09-2024. 9. The trust has been informed by the KIADB that the allotment has been cancelled by their letter dated 27-09-2024 ——— It is most unfortunate that despite the Chairman being fully qualified for the site, BJP chose to pick on him for their petty politics. A few of his achievements: working at IISc in Supercomputer Education and Research Centre (Led a team that was working on developing Intrusion Detection Systems and Penetration Testing Tools. Involved in various Computer Security projects, both network and host based systems to detect and prevent intrusions and anomalies.) • Developed Kernel level intrusion detection system • Developed first high speed kernel level packetcapture system • Discovered multiple IDS evasion techniques. • Developed algorithm to detect zero-day attacks by recognizing virus/worm patterns in scan packets. • Developed Scan Detection System. Cleared 2004 UPSC Civil Service Examinations Secured All India Rank 365 and was allotted Indian Revenue Service (Income Tax). Cleared 2000 UPSC Civil Service Examinations Secured All India Rank 414 and was allotted Indian Ordnance Factory Services. In BJP, a person who can’t hold a bat can become Chairman of ICC or BCCI, but a person who was conferred Agni Award from DRDO for Excellence in Self Reliance can’t build a skill development center for the youth.
