Representatives of Myanmar's military junta and the Shan State Progress Party (SSPP) held talks at the Shwe San Eain Hotel in Nay Pyi Taw on Friday, according to state media and regional observers.
The junta delegation was led by Lt-Gen Yar Pyae, chairman of the National Solidarity and Peacemaking Negotiation Committee, along with Lt-Gen Min Naing and other officials. The SSPP delegation was led by Second Vice Chairman Sao Khun Sai and included senior leaders Sao Naw Lek, Sao Zum Mwe, Sai Pyu Pha and Sai Laung Kham Mein.
According to junta-controlled media, discussions focused on reducing military tensions through political dialogue and exploring approaches to self-determination based on ethnic equality.
State media reported that SSPP Vice Chairman Sao Khun Sai stressed the importance of achieving lasting peace and said both sides should learn from past experiences to build trust and advance the dialogue process.
According to reports, the two sides agreed to maintain communication channels to resolve potential disputes between their respective forces. Discussions also covered regional development, anti-narcotics efforts and cooperation to combat online fraud operations.
The SSPP and its armed wing, the Shan State Army (SSA), are among Myanmar's longstanding ethnic armed organizations. The armed group was formed on April 24, 1964, while the SSPP was established on Aug. 16, 1971.
The SSPP headquarters is located in Wan Hai, Kehsi Township, in southern Shan State.
The group is a member of the Federal Political Negotiation and Consultative Committee (FPNCC), which is led by the United Wa State Army (UWSA).
The SSPP also maintains relations with members of the Three Brotherhood Alliance, including the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA), the Ta'ang National Liberation Army (TNLA), and the Arakan Army (AA), as well as the Kachin Independence Army (KIA).
The group's areas of operation include Mongshu, Kehsi, Hsipaw, Kyaukme, Tangyan, Mongyai and Momeik townships in Shan State.
Although it has maintained communication with successive governments, the SSPP has not signed the Nationwide Ceasefire Agreement (NCA).
