STATEMENT FROM THE ELECTED PRESIDENCY OF THE REPUBLIC OF CAMEROON

SUBJECT: CRISIS OF ROAD TRANSPORT OPERATORS
The Elected Presidency of the Republic wishes to inform national and international public opinion about the serious events that have led, since last Thursday, to an unprecedented mobilization of road transport operators across the country. An incident involving a gendarme and a truck driver served as the trigger for a protest movement that naturally and legitimately spread throughout the profession.
The Elected President solemnly recalls that the demands expressed by truck drivers are legal, legitimate, and deeply justified. It is the duty of the State to ensure that the rights and interests of those who keep our economy alive are no longer ignored or sacrificed.
The demands put forward by sector representatives are precise and coherent:
1. The immediate release of arrested drivers and motoboys.
2. An end to road harassment and the widespread extortion system operating along our highways—with, for instance, up to 94 checkpoints on the Douala–Kousseri road.
3. The adoption of a modern and protective collective bargaining agreement guaranteeing a dignified retirement, decent, regular, and secure wages, as well as automatic CNPS affiliation.
4. Serious and lasting rehabilitation of roads and infrastructure so that drivers are no longer penalized for failures that are not their responsibility.
Resolving this crisis is both an economic and political challenge. It requires a responsible State capable of listening, understanding, and reforming. Yet the illegitimate regime currently in power once again demonstrates its inability to meet even the minimal requirements of social dialogue. Instead, the country is witnessing:
persistent condescension from the authorities,
a categorical refusal to engage in sincere negotiations,
and, as too often, a brutal and totally disproportionate response.
The heavy-handed interventions of armed forces units, as well as the shocking images of Caterpillar bulldozers pushing trucks off the roadside, constitute unjustifiable violence against unarmed workers who are demanding nothing more than justice, dignity, and respect.
The Elected President extends his full support to every transport operator, driver, and motoboy. He reaffirms that their suffering is understood, their demands heard, and their struggle entirely legitimate. The Elected Presidency expresses its admiration for their courage and determination in defending not only their profession but also their dignity.
Cameroon will only be rebuilt when those who keep it moving—quite literally—are respected, protected, and recognized as essential contributors to our national development.
