After Deadly Fire Tragedies, Delhi Government Plans Mandatory Smoke Detectors in Every Home
In a major move aimed at strengthening fire safety across the national capital, the Delhi Government is preparing significant amendments to building bylaws that could make smoke detectors mandatory in every home, including independent houses, builder floors, gated societies, and low-rise apartments.
The proposed reforms come in the wake of a series of fire incidents in Delhi, including the devastating Malviya Nagar fire tragedy that claimed 23 lives. The government, led by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, is now considering comprehensive changes to ensure that fire safety measures extend beyond high-rise buildings and cover residential properties of all sizes.
According to Delhi Home Minister Ashish Sood, the government is reviewing existing regulations and exploring legal amendments that would bring buildings under 15 meters in height within the ambit of enhanced fire safety norms. These properties were previously exempt from many fire safety and NOC-related requirements.
Under the proposed framework, smoke detectors could become a mandatory safety feature in every residential unit across Delhi. The move is expected to significantly improve early fire detection and help prevent loss of life and property during emergencies.
Officials believe the policy could mark one of the biggest reforms in Delhi’s residential infrastructure and real estate sector, creating a stronger culture of fire preparedness and safety awareness among residents. The government is currently evaluating the proposal before introducing the final amendments.
