She's 75, She's Running, and She's Winning — Meet Ganga Maya Thapa, the Iron Lady of the Hills
TVS Report (Temi, South Sikkim), 22 Feb : There's something quietly extraordinary about watching a 75-year-old woman cross a finish line ahead of the competition. No fanfare, no excuses — just grit, grace, and years of showing up.
That's exactly what Ganga Maya Thapa did on a crisp Sunday morning at the breathtaking Temi Tea Garden in Sikkim, where she claimed 3rd place in the 10 km race (56 years & above category) at the Dragon Run, proudly organized by the 3rd IRBn / Sikkim Police. And she made it look like the most natural thing in the world.
Age Is Just a Number — But Discipline Is Everything
Ganga Maya, currently residing at Bahai School Road, Tadong, is the most senior member of Project Life — a title she wears with quiet pride and enormous responsibility. While most people her age are content to sit on the sidelines, she laces up her shoes and steps onto the track, again and again, event after event.
Competing alongside runners decades younger than herself, she didn't just participate — she podium-finished. That distinction matters. It speaks volumes about the kind of inner fire that no birthday can extinguish.
A Legacy Written One Race at a Time
This wasn't a one-time miracle. Ganga Maya has been building this legacy steadily, race by race, hill by hill. She has stood on the podium at prestigious events like the Tsomgo Ultra and the Kalimpong United Runners 10K — races that challenge even seasoned athletes half her age.
But her contribution goes beyond personal medals. She has served as a proud ambassador for some of the region's most celebrated running events, including the Darap Trail Run, Lamahatta Run, Tsomgo Ultra, and the Kalimpong Ultra Marathon. In doing so, she has become a living, breathing advertisement for what an active life can look like at any age.
More Than a Runner — A Movement
What makes Ganga Maya's story so deeply human is that she isn't running to prove a point. She's running because she loves it. Because it keeps her alive in every sense of the word. And in doing so, she's quietly inspiring an entire generation — from teenagers tying their first pair of running shoes to seniors wondering if it's too late to start.
It's never too late. She is proof.
At 75, Ganga Maya Thapa isn't winding down. She's still climbing — literally and figuratively — through the misty hills of Darjeeling and Sikkim, reminding all of us that the finish line is never really the end. It's just the beginning of the next race.
