1917 12/3 The #QuebecBridge opened for traffic after almost 20 years of planning and construction. The bridge suffered partial collapses in 1907 (August 29) and 1916 (September 11). @ManScotian
On this day in 1907, the Quebec Bridge would collapse, which would not be the last time that it would happen in the next few years sadly.

The #QuebecBridge-spanning the #StLawrenceRiver-was a long time coming. Begun in 1903, the bridge collapsed in 1907, killing 75 workers. Work resumed, & the bridge collapsed again. It finally opened to public traffic OTD in 1919, and remains the world’s longest cantilever bridge.
#OTD 1907, high above the St. Lawrence, a worker on the #QuebecBridge noticed a rivet snapped. As he called to his foreman, the giant cantilever crashed into the river. Of the 86 workers on the bridge that day, 75 died, many of them Mohawks of Kahnawá:ke.thecanadianencyclopedia.ca/e…
