β½ Somalian Referee Omar Artan Shares US Detention Experience in New York Times Interview
Somalian international referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan revealed to The New York Times: βI was interrogated for 11 hoursβ¦ and I think they have a problem with my country.β
Artan explained that right after landing at Miami Airport, he faced intensive questioning by U.S. Customs officials β covering the purpose of his visit, Somalian politics, and armed groups.
He presented official FIFA documents and photos from his successful refereeing career, yet was still held in a detention cell before being deported by plane back to Istanbul.
The referee linked the incident to his nationality, stating: βI think they have a problem with my country.β
Despite the setback, Artan received a heroβs welcome β both official and popular β upon returning to Mogadishu.
What do you think β fair security measures or something else?
