Supporting our SAS colleagues
Our SAS colleagues are an integral part of our mental health medical workforce, and we recognise that the workforce crisis that psychiatry faces can only be addressed by pooling all the talent in the entirety of the workforce. Ensuring that SAS psychiatrists are equally valued within the workplace as well as within the College is key to achieving this.
We are committed to addressing the inequities faced by SAS doctors, through our RCPsych SAS Strategy which supports our SAS members to fulfil their potential and have a rewarding career.
As we mark SAS Celebration Week 2025, RCPsych fully supports the "SAS Six statements" from the SAS Collective, and the principles that underpin them.
The statements are:
1⃣ Every early career SAS doctor should have access to an educational supervisor
2⃣All Locally Employed Doctors employed for more than two years should be offered an SAS contract
3⃣Senior SAS doctors should be offered the opportunity to be educators at every level
4⃣All SAS doctors should have equity of access to professional development opportunities
5⃣All extended roles in leadership and management should be open to SAS
6⃣All specialty doctors who meet the specifications should have the opportunity to become specialists.
These actions align with our strategy and reinforce the importance of supporting any SAS doctor seeking career development in their right to apply for specialist roles for which they are suitably qualified.
