An early leaf out means an early increase in evapotranspiration demand. Here at SERFC, we keep an eye on early leaf out areas that may not see as much rainfall converted into runoff and streamflow. Happy #Spring! 🌸
Spring is coming early this year! Here’s the timing of spring leaf out this year so far across the lower 48 with data from USA National Phenology Network. #rstats #DataViz

ALT An animation of spring leaf out timing in the contiguous U.S. from January 6, 2024 to March 18, 2024. A map and bar chart are synchronized to show the onset of spring as the year progresses, with southernmost parts of the U.S. first entering spring and rising up through parts of the southwest, midwest and east coast. On the west coast, spring first appears in southern California and Arizona, moving up towards Washington along the coast, while parts of the interior western states remain in winter. Compared to the 30-year average, spring timing is generally consistent with exceptions of late January and early March displaying increased spring leaf out compared to the 30-year average.
