Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV)
Recently, ISRO successfully launched the third and final developmental flight of SSLV (Small Satellite Launch Vehicle), called SSLV-D3, from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh.
🔹The SSLV-D3 placed the following two satellites into the intended 475-km altitude circular Low Earth Orbit (LEO)-
1. EOS-08 - Earth Observation Satellite - Weight 175 Kg - Developed by ISRO.
2. SR-0 DEMOSAT - Passenger Satellite - Weight only 0.2 Kg - Developed by Space Kidz India.
[Note - SR in SR-0 stands for ‘Space Rickshaw’. DemoSat = Demonstration Satellite. Passenger satellite means a smaller satellite that is launched along with the larger primary satellite on the same launch vehicle. It is not the primary focus of the mission.]
🔹This marks the successful completion of ISRO’s SSLV Development Project. With this, the SSLV will be inducted into the space agency’s fleet of operational launch vehicles. With technology transfer, the private industries and NewSpace India Limited (NSIL → PSU under Department of Space) will now produce SSLV for commercial missions.
