I think it was more because he knew how much damage he did to the IP. The systematic destruction of legacy characters and the introduction new characters making the dumbest decisions they could take is why SWTLJ failed to appeal to the fans and destroyed the IP beyond repair.

If you asked me seven years ago what my fav franchise was, I would say Star Wars. Then I watched SWTLJ. I walked away from opening night shocked at how bad the movie was, though I didn't realize it would also almost kill my love for SW. What a miscalculation this film was!

The only thing that SWTLJ destroyed is probably many female fans' sense of safety to show how passionate they are about the IP and how joyful it is to have a story that resonates with them.
