From hours to seconds 🤯. An economist from @QuantEcon tells the story of how JAX's simple and expressive API transformed a critical economic model for the Central Bank of Chile, making high performance accessible. #JAX #SciComp #Economics #Python goo.gle/jax-economics

the language is still one of the best when it comes to "good defaults" for writing scicomp apps (provided that you use recent versions of the standard) also, there is A LOT of "legacy" Fortran code that is still being maintained (and even developed) today

Uses uv internally for pypi, but more access to stuff that exists only in conda (c packages, some scicomp stuff, torch was far easier till uv fixed that recently)

The whole bot wall thing is incredibly stupid. Man, for someone with a PhD in material stress I'd just do a short sanity check shitshooter and ask to show some code that ain't ijk scicomp atrocity and that would be it. MS mogs the livid crap outta best of us, much respect.

Depends. 99% scicomp as seen in the wild academia is crunch model @ spew latex table @ plot points type sh~. You roll yer balls to peeps with all the unwrap &mut static 'b Ok they give you a puzzled look and tell you to stuff it where the sun don't shine and rightly so tbh.

next blog post subject secured more seriously, people are more permeable to the idea of using rust than you think: - being forced to maintain an N-decades old c pile of shit tends to annoy everyone, not only newcomers. - rust's iteration speed is closer to python than c for newcomers to both also, wagies will do what they're told. you don't get to choose the language for your new project when you can't understand tradeoffs anyway the single greatest argument against rust in scicomp is the ecosystem, which will come in time anyway

rust doesn't have to compete with optimized cuda kernels to be viable in scicomp. even current python programs aren't written correctly for numpy to do its magic. we don't need to squeeze out perf like a blas would do for rust to be a significant upgrade to existing stuff

What I love about python is how good i am at writing it. I know it's path dependency, too. But by now, I know how to write it, know the standard library (that uses C), the ecosystem. It's fast to write, easy to read, good to reason about and has goated SciComp libraries.
