On June 5, 2022, in Durban, South Africa, unbeaten 24-year-old boxer Simiso Buthelezi was dominating his WBF All-Africa lightweight title fight against Siphesihle Mntungwa. In the 10th round, after landing punches that sent his opponent stumbling, Buthelezi suddenly became disoriented. He turned away and began shadowboxing at empty space before collapsing. Despite taking little punishment, he suffered a brain injury with intracranial bleeding. Rushed to hospital, he was placed in an induced coma and died two days later on June 7. The exact trigger remains unclear, possibly a pre-existing condition worsened by the bout. The video captures his tragic final moments in the ring.
