Newcastle has a long and very proud record of supporting the Fairtrade movement.
In 1979,
#Traidcraft was set up in the city with the fundamental aim of changing peoples' lives through trade. The organisation would go on to introduce Fairtrade tea, coffee and sugar to the UK 🇬🇧
In 1990,
@SharedInterest was established with the aim of creating a fairer world by providing financial services to fair trade businesses, and supporting communities with limited income opportunities🌱
In 2003, Newcastle city council became the first metropolitan authority to receive Fairtrade status and went on to become a founding member of
#NewcastleFairtradePartnership, demonstrating a commitment to seeing Fairtrade embedded within our local economy and communities🫂
In September, on the heels of
#FairtradeFortnight, Councillor
@SBarryStanners of the Newcastle Fairtrade Partnership joined the City Council to ask for a reaffirmed commitment to the continued support of Fairtrade in Newcastle.
Thank you Stephen for raising awareness of the important work of Shared Interest during this motion.
