A piece of Harvard Square will become part of the future home of the @americanrep, with an original brick from the Square incorporated into the Goel Center for Creativity & Performance—linking both the theater’s legacy and the project’s broader regenerative design approach. Reclaimed materials are central to that vision. Approximately 190 tons of brick have been salvaged and reintegrated into the building. It’s one example of how the Goel Center is designed to go beyond minimizing impact—to actively give back to its environment, community, and occupants over its lifespan. Members of our project team attended the @BSAAIA's annual Design Awards, where the preservation and restoration of The First Church of Christ, Scientist was recognized with an Honor Award and the William D. Smith Memorial Commendation. In partnership with Finegold Alexander Architects and Simpson Gumpertz & Heger, this eight-year, multi-phase effort restored two historic Boston landmarks while keeping the building fully operational: The Mother Church Original (TMCO) edifice (1894) and The Mother Church Extension (TMCX) edifice (1906). The team revitalized centuries-old façades and Guastavino tile domes, rebuilt a deteriorated cupola using precision digital modeling, and integrated modern life safety, accessibility, and infrastructure upgrades—all without compromising the church’s historic character. #ShawmutBuilt
