For a facility managing hundreds of deliveries and dozens of newborn admissions each month, this investment represents a critical step toward improving newborn survival and quality of care. With support from @UNDP and the @GlobalFund , in partnership with the Government of Sierra Leone, solar energy is powering 24/7 care. In areas where rural electricity is just 4.9%, this means safer births and stronger health services.

The Federal Government has flagged off the distribution of 371 solar-powered energy systems to Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) across 17 states and the FCT.
Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate (@muhammadpate), performed the official flag-off at Apo PHC in Abuja. The initiative, supported by Gavi and UNICEF via the NPHCDA, aims to strengthen frontline facilities, sustain vaccine cold chains, preserve medicines and enhance routine immunisation and essential healthcare delivery nationwide.
Prof. Pate emphasised that reliable power is vital for quality care at the community level, aligning with the Nigeria Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative to revitalise primary healthcare.

This is heartbreaking but not surprising. I wrote recently about how lack of electricity is crippling health care in rural (and now urban!) Nigeria. When women deliver babies by candlelight and snakes overrun health centres, it’s not just neglect, it’s a national disgrace.
Solar energy can power these centres now. We have the tools, just not the political will.
