Meet the man who went from failing twice as a founder to building an app with 20Mn downloads ✨ 1/ As a kid, Gaurav was fascinated with building things. In 2008, he tried his attempt at JEE, but failed. A year later, he would crack IIT Kanpur. 2/ IIT was the turning point. It changed the way he think. To start his professional journey, he joined Credit Suisse from campus placements. But, the role wasn’t challenging enough, he demanded more. Following his passion for building, he set out for greatness. 3/ With a friend, Gaurav started Tapp Me - a solution to India’s renovation problem & built it to a ₹6CR ARR business with 100K customers. But, it wasn’t scalable. They had to shut the company down. 4/ They were crushed. But, the building bug hadn’t died. Going back to a job wasn’t a choice. While tinkering with other ideas, he figured there was a gap in the productivity space. 5/ Enter SortedAI - an AI reminder tool making document management seamless. But, he soon realised that this was a solution finding a problem. Investors rejected them & he failed to scale the app. 6/ Down twice, but not out. Even after multiple avenues to work abroad, Gaurav took a hard call to stay in India & build for the country. Again. 7/ He had caught a whiff of the opportunity in productivity & these failures wouldn’t stop him. Along with Snehanshu & Tamanjit, Gaurav set out to disrupt one more time - this time, with Kaagaz. 8/ The idea behind Kaagaz was simple, build an office suite for Bharat. With a fire raging in them, they applied to Y Combinator. But, failed not once, twice, but 4 times. They left with one learning every time: THINK BIGGER. 9/ In June 2020, their lives would change forever. Camscanner was banned in India. Within one day Kaagaz had 100K downloads, 300K in 2 days & 1M within 2 months. 10/ Their entire IIT friend network rallied around them, giving them the headwind they were looking for. The rest is history. 11/ Today, Kaagaz has more than 20M downloads with 4.5 ratings. The vision is still the same: build for Bharat, in Bharat. PS: In Jan 2022, on their fifth attempt, they made it to YC. It’s an absolute pleasure to have members like Gaurav in the GrowthX fam.
