We’re proud to share that YAAACE and our Community School Initiative (CSI), involving partnership with @SpiritofMath, have been featured in Diversity and Equity in Canadian Schools: Fostering Human Flourishing by Cathlene Hillier and Wendy D. Bokhorst-Heng, published by Canadian Scholars Press in December 2024! 🙌🏾📚✨ Chapter 7 highlights strategies for supporting low socio-economic status students and speaks about the work of YAAACE and the Community School Initiative as a case study. It is titled "Pedagogical Strategies for Equity and Inclusion: Addressing Low–Socioeconomic Status Students in the Canadian Classroom," written by YAAACE staff @DrEizadirad and Sally Abudiab. The Community School Initiative is a structured supplementary education program offered outside school hours — on evenings and weekends — led by a team of caring adults, including Ontario Certified Teachers (OCTs) and coaches. It's designed to close the achievement and opportunity gap by ensuring students are at or above provincial standards and on track to become 21st-century learners. Key outcomes, like improved attendance and a narrowing of the achievement gap, speak to the impact of our no-cost, culturally relevant offerings. 🌟 We’re honored to be recognized as a model for equity and inclusion in education — and even more excited to keep building brighter futures for our youth! Since 2007, YAAACE has been dedicated to providing diverse programming aimed at closing academic achievement gaps and offering enriching social and academic experiences. 📚 Offered outside regular school hours, our Community School Initiative (CSI) is designed to close the achievement gap by empowering students with the skills and mindset they need to thrive as 21st-century learners. 🌟 Through our partnership with @SpiritofMath, we proudly offer sponsorships to our students. In just 90 minutes per week, Spirit of Math delivers the equivalent of an entire week's worth of content from a typical day-school curriculum — unlocking their full potential and unleashing the genius within. 🙌 Our Transitional School for Transformation program provides educational programming and access to culturally reflective supports to help youth overcome challenges within the justice system. 👩🏽‍💻🧑🏿‍💻 Every March Break, we offer an exciting mix of structured education and athletic activities, designed to boost literacy and numeracy while igniting curiosity in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM). ☀️ Our Summer Institute is a dynamic seven-week program designed to reduce summer learning loss. It offers grade 9 destreamed math and grade 10 math credits, along with hands-on learning experiences that keep students engaged and motivated all summer long! 🏆 The NALE Program engages children and youth with a mix of education, athletics, and social activities to boost literacy, numeracy, and expand opportunities in technology and science. 🤖 Lastly, through our Expanded Opportunities and Athletics Programming, in partnership with #Engage416 and First Robotics Canada, we offer students in Grades 4 through 8 the chance to explore robotics and coding! Through all of these initiatives, we are creating equitable opportunities and pathways to success for Black, equity-denied, and justice-involved youth across Ontario. Our Labour Market Intervention Strategy (#LMIS) is a key component of this, focusing on economic empowerment and career readiness to ensure youth have not only the knowledge and skills but also the career opportunities and resources they need to thrive in education and the workforce.
