"HE WAS A SON OF HOLOCAUST SURVIVORS... WE UNDERESTIMATED HAMAS AND THE PALESTINIAN PEOPLE" His name is Alexander Dancyg (אלכס דנציג) in Hebrew. Have you heard of him? On October 7th, 2023 — Islamic jihadists known as Hamas invaded the border into Israel, killing over 1000, injuring 3,400, and abducting over 250 people at random. Alex was born in Warsaw Poland right after the Holocaust ended, to Holocaust survivors Nina and Marcin. They made aliyah to Israel when Alex was a young boy. As a teen he served in the IDF in the Paratroopers Brigade and eventually settled in Nir Oz. He thought that place was safe. It was where he chose to start his life with his former wife Rachel, where they raised 4 kids. Alex graduated Ben Gurion University and worked as a history teacher as an adult until his first trip back to Poland in 1986 — which lit a spark in his dedication to preserving Holocaust history. He went on to publish books, teach and volunteer. In 1990 he began working with the Yad Vashem Museum in Israel, training the staff and thousands of people about the Holocaust along the way. On 10/7, the grandfather of 13 kids was abducted. He was taken by Hamas into Khan Yunis, Gaza, where he was held captive for over 5 months. His family spoke out calling for his release. On October 18, the IDF informed Dancyg’s family that a signal from his phone was identified in Gaza. That was the last they heard from him. Thousands of people around the world rallied, online and in person, for him to come home after his abduction. But he died in Hamas's hands five months later. His son eulogized him, shocked by the cruel way Hamas abducted him. “You were abducted alive and breathing from your bed on that cursed morning, and you should have returned home alive and in one piece." After his death, Alex was awarded a Silver Cross of Merit from then-Polish president Lech Kaczyński as well as an award from the Polish Ministry of Education. His son added this in the eulogy. “Kibbutz Nir Oz which you so loved doesn’t exist anymore. It was desecrated, looted and burned.
